Band of Frosted Thorns in Heroic Nexus

did Heroic Nexus yesterday, I was hoping to get the Flame-Bathed Steel Girdle for Mordauk, but it seems that Keristrasza, the final boss, dropped some sort of mail appropriate for a hunter instead of the cool belt appropriate for yours truly (it was the Interwoven Scale Bracers)

Fortunately, Ormorok the Tree-Shaper, one of the other bosses, dropped the Band of Frosted Thorns. As I told my guildmates when I saw the Item, “Can I need on this? It’s kind of my thing.”

Actually, its a bit more than “kind of my thing”, it’s “exactly my thing”. Strength, Stamina and Critical Strike Rating are right up my alley as a Blood-specced Death Knight.

Because the ring I replaced was so crappy (relatively speaking, it was still Blue), it turns out that the Strength bonus is a net gain, I get about 30 extra stamina and maybe 20 critical strike rating more.

So while I did not get the Plate belt I wanted – tough luck, it didn’t drop – I still received over 2000 Rep points for the Wyrmrest Accord, and the cool Band of Frosted Thorns.

And all of that for only 19g in repairs! Wow, I can’t wait to get more Epics and see how high that repair bill can REALLY go!

Knights of the Ebon Blade [Death-Inured Sabatons]

After 3 weeks – more or less – of doing all the Knights of the Ebon Blade Dailies, turning in Vyrkul bones to the Bone Witch, and running a few instances here and there, I’ve finally done it.

I’ve achieved Exalted status with the Knights of the Ebon Blade.

Why did I put myself through that, you so rightly ask? Well, several reasons. First, Mordauk is level 80. If you’re not planning on raising your rep with factions at level 80, then you won’t have very much to do, and I enjoy playing Mordauk too much to mothball him, much like I did my much-maligned main, Mandorall at level 70.

Second, and more importantly, I wanted the [Death-Inured Sabatons]. They are Epic plate boots, perfect for a plate-wearing DPS such as myself – or a Retribution Paladin, I guess.

Here are the stats for the Knights of the Ebon Blade’s [Death-Inured Sabatons], after I was done tweaking them:

1541 Armor – not bad!
+50 Strength
+73 Stamina
+12 Critical Strike (Icewalker Enchant)
+12 Hit Rating (Icewalker Enchant)
+8 Critical Strike (Gem)
+12 Stamina (Gem)
+7 Critical Strike (Gem)
+7 Strength (Gem)
+6 Hit Rating (Socket Bonus)
+66 Critical Strike Rating (Boots’ regular bonus)

That’s a nice list, is it not? I thought so myself. Here’s what it ads up to:

+57 Strength
+85 Stamina
+18 Hit Rating
+93 Critical Strike Rating

Much like the Spiked Titansteel Hem I detailed here a few days ago, the [Death-Inured Sabatons] are worth 2.03% Critical Strike Chance, which in my opinion is HUGE, especially at level 80.

But where do I go from here? Here’s an idea. My friend and healer Extraordinaire Hladonar, whose words you may have read here, offered to enchant my legs with Icescale Leg Armor – with my mats, of course - a nice enchant if there ever was one.

Thing is, and as I told him, I’d rather wait to have Epic legs before applying an expensive Epic leg enchant.

So the quest goes on!

Only 2 More Days of Ebon Blade Dailies

Well, this part of my adventure is coming to a close. Ever since reaching Level 80, Mordauk has been dutifully doing all the Daily Quests for the Knights of the Ebon Blade.

I get a nice 10% bonus to reputation because Mordauk is Human, meaning that every day, I get 275 reputation points, time 6, for a total of 1650.

By my calculations, I only have to do it today and tomorrow to be finally rid of those quests.

In all honesty, it’s been pretty easy. 6 Daily quests a day make for a lot of rep, and the Knights of the Ebon Blade have some nice reputation items.

The first one, which you get at Revered, is the Arcanum of Torment. This is a really nice head enchant that adds 50 Attack Power as well as 20 Critical Strike Rating to a head item, in my case the Spiked Titansteel Helm (see previous article for all the juicy details).

The Arcanum of Torment cost of 150g (minus reputation discount) and I’ve bought the sucker 3 times now, item upgrades “obliges”. I seriously hope I’m done with that!

The other really nice Item, the one I’ve really been gunning for, are the Death-Inured Sabatons. Nice Epic plate boots, Strength, Stamina and Critical Stike Rating bonuses, as well as two gem slots.

I will have those tomorrow night, G*d willing.

The thing is, I’m not really sure where to go from there, in terms of what I should grind for, look for or kill for.

Any ideas?

[Spiked Titansteel Helm] for a Blood Death Knight

A few days ago, I created my very first Epic Plate for one of my own characters. Mandorall crafted a [Spiked Titansteel Helm] for Mordauk, my Blood-specced Death Knight.

Mordauk is particularly fond of critical strike rating bonuses as well as strength, so the [Spiked Titansteel Helm] is a perfect fit. The Spiked Titansteel Helm can be crafted from a recipe that Blacksmiths learn at the Trainer at skill level 440.

Mandorall required the following mats for crafting the Spiked Titansteel Helm:

Saronite Bar x 4
Titansteel Bar x 4
Frozen Orb x 1

Now the Saronite and Titansteel were in inventory, and he had to buy the Frozen Orb for roughly 100g. If I had needed to buy everything at the Auction House, I wager that the cost of materials would have been in the 800 to 1000g range.

I added a few – expensive – gems as well as the Ebon Blade Head Enchant, the Arcanum of Torment. Here is what my Spiked Titansteel Helm looked after I was done with it:

1821 Armor
+97 Strength
+50 Attack Power (Arcanum of Torment)
+20 Crit Rating (Arcanum of Torment)
+21 Crit Rating (Meta Gem)
+3% Crit Damage (Meta Gem)
+8 Crit Rating (Gem)
+12 Stamina (Gem)
+8 Crit Rating (Socket Bonus)
+60 Hit Rating
+44 Crit Rating

Now you’ll admit that this is not bad at all. All in all, this adds up to +101 Critical Strike Rating Bonus, not to mention the extra damage caused by the 97 Strength Bonus and the Attack Power Bonus.

At level 80, and set up as it is, the Spiked Titansteel Helm is worth a whoping 2.20% critical strike chance ALL BY ITSELF!

My Ebon Blade reputation is getting up there, too – only 4 more days of running the Dailies and I can finally get the Epic DPS Plate Boots they have. I’m curious to see the effect they will have on my already elevated critical strike rating!

PvP with a Death Knight?

Since I couldn’t make Brute Force’s first Heroic Instance today, I took Mordauk out for a spin. I was getting tired of playing my low-level Warlock – he’s 12 now – so I figured there must be something to do with Mordauk.

A little PvP! What’s better to dispel boredom than to get my ass roundly trounced in a Battleground. The first Battleground I entered was Arathi Basin. I know it well, so I figured I had my best chance to shine.

Not exactly.

We lost, 2000 to 80. In all fairness, I think we were a couple of players short, and the Horde was a lot better organized than we were. Either way, it was a catastrophe. The dual-wielding spec, even though wicked fast, does NOT do enough damage to make a dent in the enemy – any enemy’s – armor.

Of course, my lack of practice at this particular PvP endeavour has something do to with this.

Hopefully, I can get in on a Heroic Utgarde Keep tomorrow night and never have to do this again!

Herbalism in Sholazar Basin

Just like I did with Mandorall yesterday, I did a timed farming run in Sholazar Basin this morning, but this time for herbs.

I have bought the Artisan Flying Skill as well as Cold Weather Flying for Mordauk as well, and that has seriously depleted my funds, so looking for herbs in Sholazar Basin seemed like a good way to make it up.

I could only do a 35 minutes herb farming run this morning, on account that both I and my significant other are feeling under the weather – must be some bug going around. I’ll spare you the more gruesome details.

In 35 minutes of flying around in Sholazar Basin, I gathered:

54 Adder’s Tongue
35 Tiger Lily
11 Goldclover
14 Deadnettle
4 Frost Lotus
3 Eternal Life

Now, the Eternal life is almost worthless, on account that Crystalized Life drops very, very regularly, however the Frost Lotus is still very valuable, since it is used in high-level Alchemy recipes.

The real kicker is this: I milled the herbs – I am a Scribe, after all – and got the following:

61 Azure Pigment
6 Icy Pigment

The 61 Azure Pigment will make 30 Ink of the Sea, and the Icy Pigment will make 3 very valuable Snowfall Ink.

Overall, in that little 35 minute farming period, I’m reasonably sure that I gathered the equivalent of nearly 500g of materials on my server’s Auction House. Not bad!

Farming Herbs in Dragonblight

Weekends are when I level my characters, as opposed to weekdays, when I farm. My Death Knight, Mordauk, is now level 75 – put that in your pipe and smoke it, Fluffmuffin! and he is now questing in Dragonblight.

Of course, he is massively overpowered for the area, which makes leveling quite a bit quicker.

It’s also an excellent occasion for the Herbalist Mordauk to farm for some level appropriate herbs instead of the Briarthorn and other low-level herbs he’s had to deal with recently.

Here are some of the herbs that can be gathered in Dragonblight. This is not an exhaustive list – or at least I don’t think so – since I was not concentrating of farming:

Goldclover
Tiger Lily
Talandra’s Rose
Deadnettle

Here is a quick Dragonblight herb map:

As you can see, most herb nodes are concentrated in the west, around Star’s Rest. All herbs in Dragonblight come in the form of [Frozen Herbs], which mean that, just like the proverbial box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.

Herbs are also relatively plentiful in the northeastern and southeastern portions of Dragonblight.

I wasn’t paying attention to farming today, and I still managed to gather a little bit under 4 stacks of various herbs, which will be very useful this week when I do my “Northrend Inscription Research“.

Are Death Knights Overpowered?

So are Death Knights “Overpowered”?

Does that give you sense of satisfaction while you bash a mob in the head with ease?

Without a doubt.

Does that give an up-and-coming Death Knight a swollen head?

No question whatsoever. It goes without saying.

Which leads to Fluffmuffin and Mordauk, two very happy, head-bashing, think their poop-don’t-stink, Death Knights … happily questing together on the “Last Rites” quest chain in the Borean Tundra … a must have, I can assure you.

“So, Mordauk, you think we can do it by ourselves? The quest says it’s a level 72 3-man group…” Fluffy asks him… “Well, we are Death Knights, are we not? Who needs a third with head-bashing Death Knights??? We ROCK!!!” < insert testosterone level here>

Although I couldn’t help with the testosterone level, my head is swollen with Death Knight grandeur, and thinks it’s a swell idea as well….

We die…
Horrible deaths…
The two Grandest Death Knights have slightly lesser swollen heads now…
We call in reinforcements…
Fluffy’s husband, Drehand, level 80 Hunter, with his tanking turtle “Flo” (now you all kiss my grits!) enters the scene… We complete but Mordauk still kicks the bucket and can’t turn in….enter random level 80 warlock…finally! Completion is had!!!

Do we still have swollen heads? ummm… probably… lets see when we tackle those group quests in Dragonblight…

Death Knight’s Unholy Presence at Level 70

Once you it Northrend, let’s say at level 68, leveling goes into overdrive. This is because the Experience requirements to level are those of the Burning Crusade, which have recently been nerfed, while the Experience rewards, both for killing mobs as well as turning in Quests, are beefed up on steroids in Northrend.

At about 1,800 experience per mob, and 20,000 experience per quest – there are variations of course – burning through levels 68 and 69 all the way to 70 take no time at all.

That being said, my Death Knight reached level 70 last night upon turning in one of the Farshire quests in Borean Tundra. I just had time to brag to my Guild mates that I’d won the race – again – then it was off to bed.

This morning, I teleported to the Ebon Hold to purchase my new skills. There was an update to Death Strike as well as to Plague Strike. The Plague Strike upgrade is especially welcome, since I use it several times a fight. Death Strike, well not so much, since its use is limited by the fact that it is a little Rune-hungry, despite the fact that it heals you for a percentage of the damage dealt.

The most welcome addition to the Death Knight’s stable of skill comes in the form of a new ‘Presence’, Unholy Presence. Here is what the tooltip says:

“Infuses the Death Knight with Unholy Fury, increasing attack speed by 15%, movement speed by 15%, and reducing the global cooldown on all abilities by 0.5 sec.”

I have not had the chance to try it yet, as today is the traditional Tuesday morning break – because of scheduled maintenance on the servers, but I’m very curious to see what its effect will be.

I don’t really care about the 15% increase in movement speed, as I assume this will mostly be useful for PvP, in which I partake but very little. The 15% increase in attack speed should, however, translate itself in a nice bonus to DPS and perhaps attack power – I’ll have to see.

The reduction of the global cooldown will also certainly have beneficial effects on damage dealt, although I’m curious if it will also affect the regeneration speed of the runes.

Overall, I think that the new Unholy Presence will be a beneficial addition to the Death Knight’s palette of skills, talents and abilities. I’ll just have to test it and see whether it works better for me than Blood Presence!

How to Annoy your Guildmates

As I may have mentioned, I really, truly like my guildmates. We are all roughly the same age, have the same kind of twisted humor, and well, like to play games. Heck! Our generation are the ORIGINAL gamers!

This of course, leads to a bit of friendly competitiveness. Alex and I have been enjoying leveling our Death Knights together this past week… but who will make what level < insert current level trying to be obtained> first? And yes, he got to 69 first and left me in Netherstorm all by myself! That selfish prig! So I think I will have to stalk him throughout Northrend now…

Another thing I find endlessly amusing in WoW is how people handle their Gold. Some are hoarders, some spend like drunken sailors, with most being somewhere in the middle. Alex, my dear guild mate, is a hoarder. A tight-fisted, not-buying-nothin’ hoarder! On the flip side, he is incredibly wealthy in WoW standards. I, on the other hand, am the proverbial drunken sailor! So, on my flip side, I’m always broke. But, Oh how I love to buy new, shiny things in WoW! However, I love it more when I taunt Alex with my latest purchase and how much I spent for it… the more expensive the better, the more useless, the better!

Wait until he finds out that I’m still going for my rep with the Aldor and that I’m NOT grinding for it, Mark of Sargeras direct from the AH for me! muhahahahaha

By the way… if you are on my server, and put some in the AH, please do it cheaply for me, because I’m broke…
