Flying Mount at Level 60 Changes Everything

My Blood Elf Paladin, Wesha, is now level 64. I went to Outlands as fast as I possibly could, at level 58, and started clearing out the quests in Hellfire Peninsula. Before I knew it, I was level 60, and to my surprise a note appeared in my Mailbox, inviting to learn the riding skill that would allow me to have a flying mount.

I thought it was a mistake for sure. I mean, the last time I went through that, Outlands had not yet been nerfed, and I had to hoof it everywhere until I got to level 77 in Northrend (or whatever).

Nevertheless, I didn’t ignore the note in my Mailbox. The riding trainer is right there in Thrallmar, and after a very short conversation with him, I spent 500 WoW Gold, plus 47 Wow Gold for the Flying Mount, and became the proud owner of a Blue Wind Rider. The choice of colors was atrocious, all pastels. You’d have thought that I was choosing a mount from the Miami Vice stables… But that doesn’t matter.

What’s important that my little Blood Elf Paladin got a Flying Mount at Level 60! Let me tell you, that changes EVERYTHING! Since I already have several high-level characters, I know Outlands pretty well, and having a flying mount has allowed me to level faster than ever before.

Between Saturday morning and Sunday evening, I gained no less than FOUR LEVELS! And without breaking a sweat! The Flying Mount allows you to complete quests without bothering how to get there. You can just fly around the map, completing quests, killing mobs, gathering knick-knacks, all in the blink of an eye! Of course this requires either prior knowledge, or the judicious use of Thottbot, but no matter, you get the picture.

I think that I will be level 68 by the end of next weekend, and from then on, Northend beckons! I’ll keep you posted, however I’m pretty sure (without having checked!) that Northrend has not been nerfed, so I can probably say goodbye to my Flying Mount once I reach the northern continent. We’ll see.

Hey everyone! I know its been a long time since I wrote, and I want to talk about what I’ve been doing. In real life, my ongoing battle to quit smoking is still raging, with no easy victory achieved there, and I’ve started learning Kung Fu.

But enough of this real-life stuff! My adventures in World of Warcraft have been ongoing, despite the fact that I’ve not played any of my high-level toons for a while now. Mordauk, Mandorall, Renei, even Grunman have been mothballed for the foreseeable future (an oxymoron, I know, since the future is by definition not foreseeable). Couple of reasons for this: our guild leader, Chianna, seems to have retired (maybe she’s playing Everquest?) and with her gone, the spirit of the guild seems to have leaked out like a punctured tire. This means no other way to do instances than with PUGS and I dislike that quite a bit. Too many doosches.

Plus, as I’m sure you know, running instances take TIME, which I’m trying to spend on some other endeavours.

BUT. I could not – would not – kill the WoW monster entirely, and for that purpose, I have created a new character: it is WESHA, an outrageously conceited, albeit very good looking, Blood Elf Paladin. After what seems like very little time actually played, Wesha is now level48 and well on his way to the Outlands, and Northrend beyond it. I’m not sure whether I’ll have the gumption to play him all the way to 80, but right now it seems like a distinct possibility.

Love that. Can’t wait to try it out! Of course Wesha has got a dead squirrel on his tabard, so it may make it difficult for him to pick up chicks.

But anyways. The number of zones to clear to gain levels seems to have dropped again, the whole of vanilla WoW seems nerfed and easy. Not that I’m complaining, since I’m playing alone, mostly. But it seems too easy. When I played Mandorall, way back when, it seemed that reaching level 30 – for example – was a real feat, and getting the slow mount at LEVEL FORTY something worthy of respect. Not so much now.

Neither here nor there. My conviction that what I love most about World of Warcraft is to gain levels, rediscover abilities, and enjoy the increased power and destructive potential of my toons is intact.

Of course, I can’t wait for the new expansion, but I’m wondering which of my characters will have the honour of playing it first.

Now I’m playing a Human Warlock

Once again, I did the unthinkable. No, I did not drink the Kool-Aid. But sometimes it feels that way.

About a month ago, I deleted my second character ever, Jandrador, to make room for a new priest named Baldis, for his follicle-impaired head.

I had rolled this priest to play with Omoro, as he is a Warrior and warriors often need healing. But turns out the Omoro leveled a lot faster than I did. Of course, I have a whole stable of characters to level from 70 to 80, so I have an excuse, but that’s neither here nor there.

Thing is, I already have a priest, Herbiez. Granted, he’s nothing but a glorified Bank now, but…

So I rolled a new human Warlock. His name is Wrathster and he’s got a big mouth on him.

I always enjoy playing new characters, especially low-level ones, and its been a long time since I played a Warlock with any regularity.

On my first try with Jandrador, I didn’t like is so much, but I know the game a hell of a lot more now that I did then.

Chances are, it’ll be fun. Otherwise, I’ll just type ‘delete’ and make a Rogue. Still don’t have a high level one of these!

Remember when you first started playing World of Warcraft, all those months – or years! – ago?

Remember how Northshire Abbey seemed enormous, and you got confused looking for the trainer?

Remember when the Defias across the river seemed like a dangerous menace, only to be approached gingerly?

With several characters now in Northrend, riding dragons and defeating armies all by themselves, I had forgotten the real magic of World of Warcraft. The realization that you are truly entering another universe, one that doesn’t center around you. A universe populated with other people just like you, each of them with their own cares, concerns and ambitions.

A world where you can go from picking up buckets of grapes for coppers, to mastering arms and the arcane and raiding enemy cities, to discovering rolling plains, majestic glaciers and snowy mountains, and dark dungeons where the stench of evil permeates all.

And last night, helping a friend who is just picking up the game for the first time – still on trial account – I rediscovered why I play World of Warcraft.

Seeing the game through the eyes and perception of another helped me crystallize my understanding of World of Warcraft.

I rediscovered the joy of discovering new things, of learning new abilities and using them, and of seeing my cash balance pass one silver – again.

So don’t get too caught up in the daily grind. Don’t worry so much about a single point improvement on a piece of gear. Don’t worry about the raids, the instances, and the gold.

Cut the Guild drama out of your life, if there is any. That’s not what its about.

It’s about the wonder and joy of discovery, of learning and seeing new things.

For me, that’s World of Warcraft.

How to Annoy your Guildmates

As I may have mentioned, I really, truly like my guildmates. We are all roughly the same age, have the same kind of twisted humor, and well, like to play games. Heck! Our generation are the ORIGINAL gamers!

This of course, leads to a bit of friendly competitiveness. Alex and I have been enjoying leveling our Death Knights together this past week… but who will make what level < insert current level trying to be obtained> first? And yes, he got to 69 first and left me in Netherstorm all by myself! That selfish prig! So I think I will have to stalk him throughout Northrend now…

Another thing I find endlessly amusing in WoW is how people handle their Gold. Some are hoarders, some spend like drunken sailors, with most being somewhere in the middle. Alex, my dear guild mate, is a hoarder. A tight-fisted, not-buying-nothin’ hoarder! On the flip side, he is incredibly wealthy in WoW standards. I, on the other hand, am the proverbial drunken sailor! So, on my flip side, I’m always broke. But, Oh how I love to buy new, shiny things in WoW! However, I love it more when I taunt Alex with my latest purchase and how much I spent for it… the more expensive the better, the more useless, the better!

Wait until he finds out that I’m still going for my rep with the Aldor and that I’m NOT grinding for it, Mark of Sargeras direct from the AH for me! muhahahahaha

By the way… if you are on my server, and put some in the AH, please do it cheaply for me, because I’m broke…

Minor Inscription Research and You

My Death Knight now has an Inscriptions skill level of 355. By Burning Crusade standards, that would have been excellent, but I’m itching to get it up there, past 400 and beyond.

One thing that had been bugging me was the ‘Minor Glyphs’. You see, all the Glyph recipes (so to speak) that you learn from the trainer are ‘Major Glyphs’, and looking at the Glyph screen on my character, I could clearly see that there are several slots assigned to Minor Glyphs.

It turns out that the only way to learn how to craft Minor Glyphs is to perform, daily if possible, the Minor Inscription Research. This requires Moonglow Ink and Light Parchment. Moonglow Ink is made from Peacebloom, Silverleaf or Earthroot, and you might find that you did not keep any in stock.

I know I didn’t, which prompted an impromptu gathering run in Elwynn Forest, where I gathered enough herbs to last me for about 10 days’ worth of Minor Inscription Research.

I do wish that I’d found out about that earlier – my own fault I guess – since the Minor Inscription Research is on a 20-hour cooldown, meaning only one a day, or 8 a week if you are really consciencious.

It may be a while before I discover anything that any of my characters can use, so the bottom line is:

Keep Moonglow Ink and Light Parchment in your Inscriptor’s inventory at all time
Don’t miss a day of research
Research Early, and Research Often

All in all, despite the fact that my Glyphs are not selling nearly as well as I hoped (prayed?) that they would, I am not yet disappointed with the profession. The ease of leveling and its relative affordability make it, so far, a rewarding profession.

[Sash of Sealed Fate] from a Sundered Rumbler in Netherstorm

Well, I got yet another Blue Drop, once again while leveling Mordauk, my Death Knight. He is now level 69 and already raising hell in Howling Fjord.

Sigh… They grow up so fast!

This time, I got [Sash of Sealed Fate]. This is a belt – obviously – that has a lvel requirement of 67, and that would be ideal for a Mage that does not have a belt that is part of a set.

Here are the stats:

81 Armor
15 Intellect
Increase spell power by 35
Increase Critical Strike Rating by 23

This nice little belt dropped for me from a level 67 Sundered Rumbler that I unfortunately (or not!) had to take out while clearing the way for killing Netherock.

Concerning my further adventures in Netherstorm, I must admit that I sort of gave up. I leveled all the way to 69 – just to beat Liberty to it (!) – then decided that the leveling would be better in Howling Fjord.

I hearthed to Shattrath, then ported to Ironforge, then on the boat to the Valgarde, the Alliance city there.

My Death Knight used a two-handed sword, and I must say that I am disappointed that those were not included in the early quest rewards. I guess I’ll go on a little longer, then go to the Borean Tundra and see what kind of sword I can get there!

The Longbeards, Nethergarde Bitter and more…

I’ve been questing in Hellfire Peninsula with Mordauk, my Death Knight. He was level 58 last night, and as of about 15 minutes ago, he is now level 62.

Of course, during the span of that frenzied leveling, I was confronted again by the quest “The Longbeards”.

The innkeeper at Honor Hold wants you to go find “The Longbeards”, a pair of dwarf brothers that went off in the West somewhere.

They can be found almost due south of Falcon Watch in Hellfire Peninsula, but before you go see them, I suggest (strongly) that you visit Nethergarde Keep in the Blasted Lands.

You see, one of the Longbeards brothers, Miren, will ask you to gain your trust by bringing booze. That’s a dwarf for you. But since he’s a picky boozer, he wants Nethergarde Bitter, which is only sold by Bernie Heisten in Nethergarde Keep.

Every time I do this quest, I look for that guy – I never seem to remember where he is. So hopfully, writing about it will permanently jolt my memory.

Bernie can be found in the Northern castle at Nethergarde Keep, in the bottom left room. Turn left when you get in, then left again – he’s a “Food & Drink Vendor”.

Once you have your Nethergarde Bitter – better yet, buy a couple and put them in the bank for your next Alt that needs it – go back through the Dark Portal, and bring Miren his poison.

To “Gain Miren’s Trust” you’ll also have to be Honored with Honor Hold, but you should already be there. Otherwise, just do a couple more quests in the Honor Hold area, and that should bring you right up.

Northrend: First Look at Grizzly Hills

To be fair, I did not grind for materials today, only for XP. And by grinding, I mean doing quests. I had to drive my girlfriend to an interview this morning, so I got up at an ungodly hour – 5AM – and started my weekend World of Warcraft adventure.

Since I was there so early, it was an excellent occasion to level my Mining. Throughout the day, and without really lookfing for them, I managed to gather about 60 Cobalt Ore, bringing my skill up to about 415.

I find the layout of Grizzly Hills very interesting. Since I am playing on my Alliance character Mandorall, I only had the occasion to visit Amberpine Lodge and Westfall Bridge Encampment. Both places are quest hubs, which cleverly lead you to discover the whole map.

You will also meet an old friend, Gryan Stoutmantle of Westfall fame. He is as needy as ever and has you running all sorts of quets for him. The usual.

There are also Furbolgs, Iron Dwarves and Runed Giants, which you must take care not to run into, as they are all over the place ant at 74 Elite, best avoided.

On a different note, I managed to rip off half my fingernail in a freak doorknob accident, so typing is a real pain in the ass. This post will thus be both uninformative AND short. Sorry about that.

Also, I made ribs, with a nice homemade barbecue sauce (check out my food website for the recipe) and they are ready, so Bon Appétit!
