Farming Frost Lotus in Storm Peaks

Because I don’t have a huge network of WoW gamers from whom I can aggregate data, I have to calculate my percentage drops in a different way. I go on my farming run, and at the end of the run, see what percentage of total drops what I was farming represents against the overall total.

For example, this morning, I went farming for Frost Lotus in Storm Peaks. As you may know, the principal herb nodes in Storm Peaks are Lichbloom and Icethorn, each of which have a chance of dropping one or more (generally one) Frost Lotus when harvested.

So I farmed for about 25 minutes this morning, and I gathered the following:

26 Lichbloom
24 Icethorn
19 Crystallized Life
2 Frost Lotus

Crystallized Life doesn’t count towards my percentage total, since it may or may not drop from Herb nodes. Only the primary herbs, in this case Lichbloom and Icethorn, count towards the total. Notice that there is no Deadnettle. Guess I’ll have to go farm Goldclover or something like that if I need any of these.

But that’s beside the point. 2 Frost Lotus for 50 Primary Herbs means 4%, which is considerable better than what I got in Zul’Drak. Moreover, Lichbloom and Icethorn are higher-level herbs and are not only move valuable on the Auction House, they are also considerably more useful to level my Alchemy skill.

I realize that the sample I base myself on to affirm a 4% gathering rate is quite small. By that I mean minuscule. I hope to be able to build on it in the coming weeks and be able to give you a more precise estimate. But right now, it looks pretty good for Frost Lotus in Storm Peaks.

Crafting the Flask of the North is expensive

I have finally discovered the reason why Frost Lotus are ever so profitable to sell on the Auction House. There is a little recipe that you learn, as an Alchemist, at still level 425. It is called the Flask of the North. Sounds cool, eh?

The Flask of the North is a Bind on Pickup item that has the following effect: Increases your Spell Power by 47, Increases your Attack Power by 80, or Increases your Strength by 40 for 1 Hour. It has the clear disadvantage of counting as both a Battle Elixir and a Guardian Elixir, however you’re free to die as many times as you want withing the allotted time, since the “effects persist through Death.”

The Flask of the North requires nothing more to craft that an Enchanted Vial and (4) Frost Lotus.

In all my years of playing World of Warcraft, I have never encountered a situation where it is clearly so much better to sell the materials than to sell, or in this case use, the crafted item.

I have been selling the Frost Lotus for over 50 WoW Gold each. Conservatively, this means 200 Gold for each Flask of the North you don’t make. This is pretty significant.

If you are looking to level your Alchemist skill, you are much better of making ‘green’ recipes and only leveling at 1-in-5 than making the Flask of the North. In fact, I recommend casting the Northrend Alchemy Research and crafting what you find there. I got the ‘Elixir of Lightning Speed’ the other day, made a whole bunch and sold them on the Auction House for close to what the mats would have sold for.

Don’t make the Flask of the North. It’s expensive to make, you won’t be able to sell it to anyone, and if that wasn’t enough, it’s not even that good.

Sell the Frost Lotus and buy yourself something pretty, instead.

Farming Crystallized Fire in Borean Tundra

I realized that my previous article about farming Crystallized Fire was a little too skewed towards maximum level characters, and I understand that some other, less exalted, or more humble, so to speak, characters may have need of Crystallized Fire.

After all, Crystallized Fire is used in all sorts of recipes, from Blacksmithing to Tailoring and Engineering and more, and of course you can combine 10 Crystallized Fire into (1) Eternal Fire for even mor uses.

The best place I had found to farm Crystallized Fire was a cave in Northeastern Storm Peaks (62,40) but it turns out the Wailing Winds it drops from are level 78-80, and what do to if you are much lower level?

Well, Wesha has a plan. This morning, I tested a promising spot in Borean Tundra. The spot is at (50,15), in the top left corner of the map, just next to the Horde Outpost there, whose name I forget. The mobs you want to be killing to farm Crystallized Fire are the Raging Boilers, Fire Elementals that they are.

HOLD ON! RAGING BOILERS?!?

Are you kidding me? ‘Raging Boilers‘? That either sounds like a great name for a band, or more precisely, for an untreated infection on your ass. Seriously. Raging Boiler. Who thought up that one? How did that go through committee? Just say it out loud and try not to think of a large, angry, painful boil on your behind!

Anyways. The drop rate for Crystallized Fire is far from fantastic, as I gathered 11 Crystallized Fire in 51 Kills. That’s about a 20% drop rate. Bear in mind that I got lots of doubles, so the actual drop rate may be lower. I’ll have to go back and kill more stuff to be sure.

Erin tells me that ‘Raging Boiler‘ is also a surprisingly appropriate name for a “really smelly toot”.

I didn’t get much more from killing all those elementals, apart from 4-5 gray pieces of equipment, and of course the usual gray item – such as Elemental Husk – that helps you count how many kills you got.

Overall not a very profitable run, but 11 Crystallized Fire in about 20 minutes, including travel time, is not too bad.

Dont Bother Farming Relics of Ulduar

I wish some things lasted forever. I really do. But like most good things, the mountain of cash that was to be made farming Relics of Ulduar in Stormpeaks has dried up.

You can, of course, still farm the Relics of Ulduar if such is your interest, but if you are farming them with the intention of selling them and retiring to the beach in Tanaris, then I am afraid that you may be out of luck.

Turns out that nobody wants the damn things anymore, and if they are, they are farming them themselves, the selfish jerks! Think about all the money they are not paying out to YOU for having farmed them, saving them countless hours that could be spent… doing other, endgame things!

Or maybe they were just bored and wanted to farm. Who knows. Stranger things have happened. Anyways, don’t bother farming them unless you intend to turn them in for the Sons of Hodir reputation. Turns out that you can buy them on the Auction House for as little as 40 Gold for a stack of 200 – that’s less than 35s apiece!

If you want to make cash, right now farming Frost Lotus seems hot, so I’d do that, instead.

Make a Killing With Frost Lotus

My Paladin Wesha is now an exalted level 77, and has of course been puttering around Northrend for a while now. I have discovered than one of the most regular sources of income I can find is to farm and Auction off the Frost Lotus drops I get.

Just to recap, Frost Lotus is currently the highest level herb in World of Warcraft, and according to some, is likely to remain so for quite a while yet. Frost Lotus is used in a variety of very high-level Alchemy recipes, mostly for Flasks and Stones. Here is what the Frost Lotus can be used in:

Emerald Bag (32-slot Herb Bag, gotta get me some of that!)
Flask of the North
Indestructible Alchemist Stone
Mercurial Alchemist Stone
Mighty Alchemist Stone
Flask of Endless Rage
Flask of Pure Mojo
Flask of Stoneblood
Flask of the Frost Wyrm

Now bear in mind those are all really high level, so the people needing Frost Lotus to level their skill are likely to be flush with cash. Don’t be shy when pricing your items.

On the Gnomeregan server, Horde-side (where I currently play), a single Frost Lotus can be sold for 50-60 WoW Gold. This is a reliable price, not a pie-in-the-sky wishful thinking price. This can make farming for Frost Lotus a very profitable venture indeed.

But where can Frost Lotus be found?

Frost Lotus can be farmed in any Northrend zone that has herb spawn nodes, meaning everywhere except Crystalsong Forest, that dead and depressing dump. Frost Lotus has about a 5-6% chance to drop on any herb node, usually in singles but occasionallyin doubles and even triples.

Frost Lotus can also be farmed in Wintergrasp, where it has spawn nodes of its own. Since I am also an Alchemist and do not farm purely for profit, I enjoy being able t0 gather other herbs along with my Frost Lotus, so I stick with the regular zones.

Once you get past Alchemy level 400 or so, you will find that Frost Lotus becomes more and more prevalent in all the recipes you could be making to level your skill. Since I enjoy having Gold as well as leveling my skill, I sell 50% of the Frost Lotus I farm, which makes for a very stable income and still lets me level my skill at a decent pace.

Farming Frost Lotus, either for leveling Alchemy, or simply to make wow gold, is relatively quick and easy. Make sure to farm with your highest level character in the zone with the most herb nodes. I recommend Scholazar Basin if you also need Tiger Lily, Adder’s Tongue and Goldclover.

Alchemy: Resurgent Healing Potion

Wesha’s Alchemy skill is now at 360. It’s funny that in all my years of playing World of Warcraft, farming for gold and other materials, and learning all sorts of new things, I’ve never had an Alchemy skill quite that high.

I was desperate to reach 350 so that I could get the Grand Master level and start learning Northrend and Wrath of the Lich King recipes.

The first recipe that becomes available, correct me if I’m wrong, is the Resurgent Healing Potion. Strangely enough, this Healing Potion heals exactly the same amount, 1500 to 2500 as a Super Healing Potion.

I’ve read on Thottbot people asking questions as to why this is the case, and while I didn’t read anything definitive, I do have an idea. The Super Healing Potion requires Netherbloom, which requires you to go to Netherstorm to farm, and needless to say, is quite the PITA.

I think that the Resurgent Healing Potion is one of the recipes that was included just to make leveling a little easier at the beginning of Wrath of the Lich King. After all, all you need is (2) Gold Clover and an Imbued Vial to create a Resurgent Healing Potion, which I’m sure you’ll agree beats the hell out of a pair of Netherbloom and some Felweed.

Gold Clover is all over the map in the Warath of Lich King starting areas – Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord, making creating the Resurgent Healing Potion very quick and easy. This potion, however, turns Yellow at 360, so it’s not really good for a long term plan, but its the easiest 10 high-level points you can get, that’s for sure.

In short, creating the Resurgent Healing Potion requires two Gold Clovers, an Imbued Vial and an Alchemy skill level of 350. It heals 1500 to 2500 Hit Points, just the same as a Super Healing Potion, but much easier to create. And if you’re looking for WoW Gold, as most people are, you’ll be glad to know that the Super Healing Potions are quite popular on the Auction House with your fellow WoW players, so you can rotate the stock, so to speak, selling the Super Healing Potion and replacing them in your inventory with Resurgent Healing Potions. Nobody will notice a difference except your bank balance!

Farming Netherbloom in Netherstorm is FUN!

Playing a Horde character is fun. For instance, you can pretend you’re really bad ass and so much better, and cooler, than all those Alliance pussies with their pretty toon and fancy thingamajigs and whatnots.

Once of the disadvantages, at least in my case, is that I know nobody and since I hate people (not really, I love you guys!) I find it difficult to get groups to do instances that are not douchebag-heavy. Which brings me to my actual point: I have hit a wall leveling alchemy. I’m stuck at skill level 347 and I need three lousy points to be able to learn the Northrend-level alchemy and the cool recipes that come with it.

Since I can’t do Instances, I am somewhat limited in my choices for leveling. All that’s left that’s not grey is some sort of Super Healing Potion, and it requires Netherbloom. Since my leveling was so wicked fast, I didn’t even make it to Netherstorm, the only place where Netherbloom is found. I made a little foray there, riding my trusty Blue Wind Rider.

To start with, here is a partial Netherstorm Herb map:

As you can see, the map is not entirely explored, because I had to do this this morning and my time is limited. Before you go off looking for Netherbloom in Netherstorm, better know what it’s used for, and – conveniently enough – here is the list:

Destruction Potion
Elixir of Empowerment
Elixir of Major Mageblood
Flask of Blinding Light
Flask of Chromatic Wonder
Haste Potion
Shrouding Potion
Super Healing Potion (the only one I care about!)
Super Rejuvenation Potion
Superior Mana Oil

Wow, Renei, what a pleasantly polyvalent herb! Yeah well who cares. All I want is to level up 3 freakin’ points!

I spent about 40 minutes of my life this morning farming Netherbloom in Netherstorm, with somewhat disappointing results. This is due in great part to the fact that I had no flight point to Netherstorm, and had to fly on my crappy flyer all the way there, cutting down on my actual farming time.

Anyways, here is what I got:

33 Netherbloom
15 Dreaming Glory
5 Felweed
1 Golden Sansam
5 Motes of Life
1 Mote of Mana

I also got about 1 Wow Gold’s worth of grey stuff and loot, and 1 Green Item which I can’t disenchant so will be vendored.

All in all, not a total catastrophe, but I’ll be back there tomorrow and I’ll see what I can actually get in a REAL 30 minutes of farming, with no taxying about…

Make WoW Gold Farming Terocone in Terokkar Forest

Frustrated by the slow speed of my Alchemy leveling, I decided to go farming Terocone in Terokkar Forest. Terokkar Forest is actually the only zone in World of Warcraft where Terocone can be found.

Before we go any further, please allow me to display the Terokkar Forest Herb Map, courtesy of Blizzard:

Terocone are used in the following Alchemy recipes:

Elixir of Draenic Wisdom
Elixir of Major Agility
Elixir of Major Defense
Elixir of Mastery
Elixir of the Searching Eye
Fel Strength Elixir
Flask of Relentless Assault
Haste Potion
Heroic Potion
Insane Strength Potion

Obviously, most of those potions are actually quite useful for characters level 60-70 or so, so I decided to spend a little bit of time – about 30 minutes - farming Terocone in Terokkar Forest.

Overall, the loot was quite miserable, but I did manage to gather some herbs. Here’s what I got from my little farming run:

34 Terocone
29 Felweed
16 Motes of Life
4 Fel Lotus
6 Dreaming Glory
1 Mana Thistle

I only managed to loot about 50s’ worth of Grey stuff from the mobs I killed, but I you were to sell all the herbs on the Auction House, I gather you would get upwards of 100 WoW Gold for the lot. At least Horde-side, on my server, just the Fel Lotus are worth about 10-12 WoW Gold each, and the Terocone about 2-3 WoW Gold apiece.

Farming Terocone in Terokkar Forest is perhaps not the best way to make WoW Gold, but it certainly isn’t the worst!

Blacksmithing: Eternal Belt Buckle

The Eternal Belt Buckle is an item created – crafted – by high-level Blacksmiths that attaches an extra socket to any Belt-slot items. It is very useful, as it is not Soulbound and can be traded or sold to any character in the game. A nice steady money-maker for your Blacksmiths out there.

Attaching an Eternal Belt Buckle to a belt causes the item to become Soulbound, so think about what you are doing before attaching it.

Eternal Belt Buckle Blacksmithing Level
A Blacksmith will need a Blacksmithing Skill Level of 415 to be able to learn this ‘recipe’ from the trainer. The recipe becomes Yellow at 420, Green at 425 and Grey at 450. It is not really useful to level up the skill, but will contribute a solid 10 points to your Blacksmithing Skill Level before the law of diminishing returns kicks in.

What are the Mats Required to craft an Eternal Belt Buckle?
To make an Eternal Belt Buckle, you will require the following materials:

4 Saronite Bars
1 Eternal Earth
1 Eternal Water
1 Eternal Shadow

As you can see, the mats are not exactly cheap, but they are not outrageous, either. This means that you will at the very least recuperate your materials costs when you sell your Eternal Belt Buckles on the Auction House.

There are several really cool points about the Eternal Belt Buckle. From the standpoint of the Blacksmith that is crafting them, they are easy and relatively cheap to make, will help you level your skill, and you will never run out of people to buy them, since as soon as your customers upgrade their gear, they will need to get a new one.

From the user’s point of view, the Eternal Belt Buckle adds an uncolored gem slot to a belt-slot item, which means that they can customize that item to a never-before-seen degree. Casters can add spell power, DPS toons can add critical strike chance, etc., without compromising the slot and overall gem bonuses of the rest of their gear, all of that at a very affordable price.

While I’m not saying that crafting the Eternal Belt Buckle will make any Blacksmith rich beyond his or her wildest dreams, it will be a steady source of income and nice little boost to the Blacksmithing Skill. And for users, while it will not drastically boost your character’s performance, it a chance not to be missed to enhance your class-specific stats and / or abilities at a discount!

Make sure you always use an Eternal Belt Buckle!

Farming Relics of Ulduar in Storm Peaks: Winning Proposition?

Last week, I got a really nice email from a reader called Jake, who alerted me to an interesting Gold-making opportunity that I was not really aware of.

Being that I had been away from the game for a month and a half or something, I was not necessarily aware of the latest developments, and Jake kindly pointed me to farming the Relic of Ulduar as a way of making WoW Gold.

Relics of Ulduar are used to gain reputation with the Sons of Hodir, in Storm Peaks. These guys are the ones selling those cool Mammoth Mounts you’ve seen around, and apparently, lots of people are keen to gain rep with these guys.

I wanted to spend an hour of my precious time farming these relics, and see what I could get.

Now to the Farmer-in-Chief: I sent Mordauk, my powerful Death Knight, to gather some Relics. Not only is Mordauk my “main” if you will, he is also the best-equipped of all my characters, and most likely to come back from the farming more or less in one piece.

Mordauk has about 50% Epic gear – all 5-man Heroic stuff mind you – none of that time-vampire raiding gear – so I knew I would have to be mindful of the repair bill. Check him out now on WoW Armory, it’ll give you an idea.

To start with, here is the map of where I went to farm my Relics, based on my reader’s recommendations:

The mobs available for killing in that place – the Snowdrift – are:

Stormriders
Stormforged War Golems
Stormforged Artificers

There are also some Snowdrift Jormungar, monstrous man-eating worms that they are, but they don’t drop Relics. You may still want to kill them for their delicious and valuable Worm Meat.

Every single mob in that area is level 78-80, non Elite. All of them, with no exceptions fell under my blows in seconds, and will do so for any half-decently-played level 80, so I’m not going to go into details about DPS rotations, amount of hit points, etc.

You hit them, they die, you search their bodies for loot like a peasant on a battlefield, and move on. That’s it.

Here is Mordauk wah-tah-ing a Stormrider:

In the next picture, Mordauk turns a perfectly serviceable Stormforged War Golem into a pile of rusting crap. Observe:

Fun… LOL … Ahem. Yes. So I spent an hour killing all those guys, and here is what I got:

“Looted” a respectable 11g 5s 5c
“Pilfered” 36g 72s 39c worth of Grey Vendor Trash
“Appropriated” 25 Crystallized Air, 13 Frostweave Cloth, 12 Worm Meat (Gross I know) and 5 Green Magical items
“Liberated” 66 Relics of Ulduar

The WoW Gold total, before selling the Relics of Ulduar, was 47g 77s 44c, which is not so bad, but not great, either.

HOWEVER, the 66 Relics of Ulduar sold on the Auction House for 157g 54s 20c – after Auctioneer Chilton’s cut (that guy must be loaded).

My Grand Total, therefore, for one hour of Farming Relic of Ulduar in Storm Peaks, is 205g 31s 64c, which is a LOT better.

You must also take into account that the Crystallized Air and the Worm meat are not yet sold, and the 5 green items, once properly disenchanted, should yield at least another 75-100g.

It is safe to conclude that if it’s WoW Gold you want, then at over 300g per hour, you could do worst than farming Relics of Ulduar in Storm Peaks.

Oh – here is one last picture, this time of Mordauk about to teach table manners to a Stormforged Artificer:

“Hey! You say you made 300g, but what about the repairs on that expensive-looking Epic gear you mentionned? Did they bring you down to the poor house? Did they make you re-evaluate your life choices, cringe at little noises, and wail in regret at a thousand missed opportunities?”

Not quite. They cost 2g 19s 57c. That’s it. My new Rogue’s mount money is safe.
