When, according the the standards of the Queen of Dragons who resides in Wyrmrest Temple in Dragonblight, you’ve dealt a “blow to the Scourge” she orders you to report to the Son of Saurfang next to the Wrathgate, in northwestern Dragonblight.

When you complete the quest by talking to him, a movie starts where you see the Horde and Alliance jointly assaulting the Wrathgate and drawing out Arthas, only to be – spoiler alert – betrayed by the Forsaken.

I have complete that Quest chain several times on Alliance side, and I must say that I am a little dissapointed that the movie is the same for Horde and Alliance, since it is very Alliance-centric.

I was hoping to see it from the point of view of the Son of Saurfang, observing the battle until he decides to attack and reinforce the Alliance.

Anyways, I hope that the quests that follow have a little variety to them and are not simply copies of the Alliance ones. One can pray. Or one could find out very easily through the power of the interweb. Or one can wait until tonight and find out for oneself.

My Blood Elf Paladin, Wesha

Hey everyone! I know its been a long time since I wrote, and I want to talk about what I’ve been doing. In real life, my ongoing battle to quit smoking is still raging, with no easy victory achieved there, and I’ve started learning Kung Fu.

But enough of this real-life stuff! My adventures in World of Warcraft have been ongoing, despite the fact that I’ve not played any of my high-level toons for a while now. Mordauk, Mandorall, Renei, even Grunman have been mothballed for the foreseeable future (an oxymoron, I know, since the future is by definition not foreseeable). Couple of reasons for this: our guild leader, Chianna, seems to have retired (maybe she’s playing Everquest?) and with her gone, the spirit of the guild seems to have leaked out like a punctured tire. This means no other way to do instances than with PUGS and I dislike that quite a bit. Too many doosches.

Plus, as I’m sure you know, running instances take TIME, which I’m trying to spend on some other endeavours.

BUT. I could not – would not – kill the WoW monster entirely, and for that purpose, I have created a new character: it is WESHA, an outrageously conceited, albeit very good looking, Blood Elf Paladin. After what seems like very little time actually played, Wesha is now level48 and well on his way to the Outlands, and Northrend beyond it. I’m not sure whether I’ll have the gumption to play him all the way to 80, but right now it seems like a distinct possibility.

‘You know what I love most about your eyes? When I look deep into them, … I can see my own reflection.”

Love that. Can’t wait to try it out! Of course Wesha has got a dead squirrel on his tabard, so it may make it difficult for him to pick up chicks.

But anyways. The number of zones to clear to gain levels seems to have dropped again, the whole of vanilla WoW seems nerfed and easy. Not that I’m complaining, since I’m playing alone, mostly. But it seems too easy. When I played Mandorall, way back when, it seemed that reaching level 30 – for example – was a real feat, and getting the slow mount at LEVEL FORTY something worthy of respect. Not so much now.

Neither here nor there. My conviction that what I love most about World of Warcraft is to gain levels, rediscover abilities, and enjoy the increased power and destructive potential of my toons is intact.

Of course, I can’t wait for the new expansion, but I’m wondering which of my characters will have the honour of playing it first.

New Gold Making Opportunity?

I got an email yesterday from alert reader Jake, who notified me of a gold-making opportunity I had missed.

It involves grinding, but then again, most traditional methods to make WoW Gold require you to do so. It’s only a matter of how tedious the grind is, and what the potential profit is. If you’re going to be making 300 WoW Gold an hour, then I’m thinking that you can probably tolerate some pretty horrendous grind…

Anyways, I’ll be giving it a shot in the next couple of days, and let you know how that works out.

As always, drop me a line – and by a line, I mean an email – if there is something that you would like me to explore further, and share with my readers. I’m just getting back from a “long” World of Warcraft break, about 6 weeks, and I need the input to get my WoW legs back, so to speak.

Where to Find Thorium, and Other Existential Ponderings

As you know, I’ve not been writing very much this last month or so. There are several reasons for this, but the principal one is that I’ve been looking for reasons to keep playing, and I haven’t found many.

I’ve loaded the game a few times, ran around, but I feel that I know the content – non end-game, of course – so well that it’s kind of pointless.

Even right this second I’m pondering whether I should delete these miserable few lines, and write at another moment when inspiration flows more smoothly.

I won’t delete them of course, but you see what I mean.

I have been so far removed from World of Warcraft in these last couple of weeks, that I was shocked yesterday when I received an MSN message from my friend Morevan, Guildmaster – or co-Guildmaster, I just haven’t been keeping up – of Ragnarok on US-Gnomeregan.

Turns out that Morevan has dropped Herbalism for mining, and is now leveling his skill, and needed a good place to look for Thorium. Needless to say, the question caught me flat-footed.

Where does one find Thorium? Then I remembered Eastern Plaguelands, Burning Steppes, Un’Goro… It all came flooding back.

Hopefully, this dark mood which has befallen me will eventually pass, and I will be free to rejoin the World of Warcraft, without looking back. Until then, I will keep the flame alive by telling myself that I have too much invested to stop

But I’m sure that’s just me.

Well, it’s true. Over the last week or so, I’ve been pondering my future, both as editor of Hidden Warcraft, as well as in World of Warcraft in general. I’ve been playing World of Warcraft for over 2 years now, and I know all the leveling content by heart.

Because of the douchebag way that things are setup, it is virtually impossible for me to see end-game content, for the simple reason that I don’t have the time to spend to get properly geared up – not even close.

To give you an example, I had to wait to be level 80 to visit level 70 end-game raids and instances. What would you do in my shoes? Would you wait until the next expansion comes out, when I can take my toons to level 90 to see some level 80 end-game stuff, all the while giving $15.99 per month to Blizzard?

Something that makes me think, to say the least.

Anyways, back to the title of this post.

I’ve decided to empty my numerous banks of the mountains of stuff I’ve been hoarding, and transform all that into useful WoW Gold. I figure the value of everything in there should be about 10,000 Wow Gold.

So I’ll sell everything, and see how long it takes me to reach, say… 50,000 Gold.

New challenge – money for its own sake.

Secrets of Ulduar Patching Fun

This is it! The BIG DAY! The day the new content patch comes out!

New gear, new quests, new raids, new everything!

Of course, with every patch – this one is 3.1 – comes the usual difficulties. They mostly have to do with add-ons, in my case.

This morning, I had in mind farming for some Borean Leather from the Wooly Mammoths in Borean Tundra. They’re not aggressive, easy to kill, and drop Chunks O’ Mammoth on top of everything, so…

I painfully install the patch. Warcraft seemed to think that I was behind a firewall, so it took FOREVER. Then the installation.

Then the booting of the game, only to discover that I need to spend all my points again, on account of the talent points having been all refunded.

Ok, I think to myself, I know this stuff *cold* – it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.

And indeed, it doesn’t… except that my Night Elf Druid, in Dire Bear Form, now gets its well-toned ass kicked every which way by a bunch of Mammoth Calves.

So either we were seriously nerfed, or I completely screwed up the Talent points. I think it may be a combination of both.

And now I have to log on to all my *other* toons and do the same thing over again, hoping not to screw up.

Incidentally, I’ve also discovered that none of my precious add-ons work anymore. I think I will get the Curse client and let the machines to my thinking for me.

My beautiful scrolling battle text (in a font fit for a 2-year-old) is gone, replaced by …. nothing. Not even the original, game-standard, Times New Roman boring text. Hmmm.

Anyways, I’m sure the Curse Client will figure out everything. It had better.

Using the Auction House

Instead of farming this morning, as I usually do, I decided to post on the Auction House all the items I’ve been collecting over the last few weeks.

It really needed to be done, otherwise stuff was going to start being deleted from my mailbox!

I listed pretty much everything I had, with some notable exceptions.

I send all my cloth to Renei, my tailor, who hopefully will one day level and do something with it. Relieff, on top of being my main Auction House alt, is also the keeped of feed, for when I finally decide that I want to have a cook.

I don’t sell gems, because I always think that they may be needed at some point. Big mistake, I know.

There is one category of items that I used to sell, but don’t anymore, and that’s enchanting materials. Every day I send a whole bunch of greens and blues to be disenchanted by Hladonar. These items are by-products of farming, running instances and Mandorall’s Blacksmithing.

While some of them have a little value on the Auction House, I thought I would rather go with the certain value of the enchanting material. Unfortunately, it seems that the prices have dropped significantly, and that the volume of sellers has exploded, two things that go hand in hand.

So now I’m sitting pretty on what used to be several thousand gold of enchanting material. I don’t want to give them away, so I guess I’ll wait.

All in all this morning, I must have listed 300 items for sale. I started the morning with 507g 27s 57c. I posted everything for 48 hours, to take full advantage of the weekend. I’ll let you know much I have on Sunday!

Farming Emblems of Heroism

Farming Emblems of Heroism. I suppose it was bound to come to this eventually.

Over their lives, my toons have farmed pretty much everything. They have farmed Ore, for blacksmithing (and a brief and regrettable foray into Engineering), Herbs for Alchemy and Inscription, and Leather for Leatherworking.

I have farmed gold, greens to disenchant and pretty much anything else you can think of.

I have farmed rep – recently and successfully for the Knights of the Ebon Blade. I even tried farming Honor in Battlegrounds, although I can’t stand it and that didn’t last too long.

After discussing with Hladonar yesterday, it was established that what I *really* need now is to farm Emblems of Heroism.

I was looking through the lists of reputation rewards, and nothing seemed to strike my fancy. Oh, I’ll keep the Wyrmrest Accord Tabard on, since it looks cool and I want that Drake, but in terms of gear, I figure I need to farm about 400 Emblems of Heroism to get the following:

I realize, of course, that the next Expansion, whatever it may be called, will probably be out by the time I get all this stuff, rendering all my efforts obsolete.

But eh, I need an excuse to keep playing Mordauk, by far my favorite character. So there you have it, 400 Emblems of Heroism, which boils down to over 100 Heroic Instance Runs.

The promising thing is that we have several toons that are coming to 80 now in the Guild, so there will be opportunities for many runs!

According to Hladonar, who knows better, this article is full of uber-noobish mistakes. Seems that the Emblems of Heroism don’t give access to that nice gear, the Emblems of Valor do. Or something.

Sorry about that, I’m new to the Epic stuff.

Mandorall’s Blacksmithing Adventures: Epilogue

Well, it has finally come to this. My Blacksmithing Adventure is coming to a close.

After 2 years of playing World of Warcraft, of picking up Blacksmithing as a trade skill and then acrimoniously dropping it, blogging about how much I dislike it, I picked it up again and manfully took it to its logical conclusion.

Last night, I reached the exalted Blacksmithing skill of 440. At that level, all the recipes that are orange and the Titansteel ones. So I figure I will be crafting the occasional epic gear for my friends and guildmates, who courageously stood by me during my leveling.

I speak, of course, of Hladonar and his numerous Alts, Chianna and her scarry alter ego Fluffmuffin, Gravewax and Chromer, and my friend Omoro, new to the Guild and to WoW, that helped me rediscover the pleasure of World of Warcraft.

This Blacksmithing achievement – it’s an achievement for me, believe it, even if Blizzard won’t give me 10 points for it! – belongs to all of us, and I’m sure I’ll be crafting epics for no tips for a while yet!

So what’ next? Mordauk is leveling his Ebon Blade reputation, 6 mind-numbing Daily Quests a day, and working on his Inscription, which above 430 slows down to a (bare) crawl.

Allanona is sitting pretty in Howling Fjord, still level 71, and Renei mirrors her inaction in Valiance Keep, Borean Tundra. Both are patiently waiting the adventures that are sure to come!

Poor, old, enfeebled Grunman, so powerful in the (pre WotLK) days of yore, bides his time in Warsong Hold, waiting for the respec that will drag him out of his morass, while Zallesta, Grunman’s sidekick and bank and Auction House Alt, sits pretty (literally) in Silvermoon City, doing her nails and not much else.

Herbiez and Relieff count their money, waiting for next shipment of loot to come in and hawk on the streets.

Maybe a Leatherworking or Tailoring Leveling Guide will be happening soon?

Upcoming Features on Hidden Warcraft

I spent the whole weekend leveling, and I must say I was not very assiduous in taking notes for my articles. It was one of those traditional World of Warcraft weekends: get up really early and play and level like crazy.

Of course, being level 71, leveling like crazy takes a whole new meaning! Gone are the days where I could gain 5 levels in a day! No, my Death Knight started the weekend, on Friday night, at level 71, and finished on Sunday night at level 73, well on his way to 74.

I have a little friendly leveling competition going with Chianna, our Guild Leader (who also occasionally writes here) and I’m curious to see how she is going to catch up, since she abandonned her Death Knight, Fluffmuffin, at 71 to play her level 40-something Shaman, Moyamoya.

But I’m not taking this too seriously: if you’ve been reading this blog for long enough, you must have figured out that I am never in a rush to level. I enjoy playing too much to miss out on things because I’m in a rush.

Over the past couple of weeks, a friend of mine – real life – started playing World of Warcraft, at my recommendation. He is not someone who is naturally inclined to video games, and to my great delight, seems to be enjoying himself very much.

He calls me every night with all sorts of questions, and I’ve found that I really enjoy answering them. Usually they are pretty basic questions – how the trainers work, talents, quests and so forth.

I realized that there must be TONS of people just like him out there, and I know that getting answers to basic questions is not always easy. World of Warcraft jargon and terminology is often baffling to the new user, and database websites can be more confusing than they are helpful if you are not familiar with game concepts.

To that effect, I’ve been writing an e-course. It will be available in the next few days – once Hladonar is done editing it! – and will address basic concerns that a new player may have.

Of course, I’ve taken care that it is also valuable to the majority of players. It will cover concepts such as Farming, installing the proper add-ons, how to use Bank Alts and the Auction House, and more.

The whole course, which will take place over 10 days, will be available by email, and while the focus will be about making and keeping WoW Gold, it is full of clearly written tips that will be useful to the new players trying to find their ‘WoW Legs’.

At the request of a Guildie – Chromer I think, but I may be wrong – I will also feature an article on how to easily transfer gold and items from Horde to Alliance and vice-versa. This will be available on or before Wednesday.
