Chilled Meat from Frosthorn Rams?

Following the recommendation of Hammermond to farm Chilled Meat from Frosthorn Rams, I made my up the Fjord this morning, all the way to Fort Wildevar.

My goal, as it usually is, was to slaughter as many Frosthorn Rams and their Kids – no kidding, that’s what they’re called. Oh wait… /sigh…

Anyways, I started just east of Fort Wildevar, on the north shore of the lake, and I moved up in the mountain, slaughtering everything that moved.

“Taste cold steel, feeble Frosthorn Ram!” Actually it’s “Taste Cold Steel, feeble Canon-Restraint rope!”

If anyone can tell me where that’s from, you will have my undying respect and admiration. Sorry, no money. One person – Etienne – is excluded from this contest for my undying respect and admiration, since he already has them, and more importantly, I know he knows the answer.

But that takes us far, far away from Frosthorn Rams. Sorry ’bout the rambling.

Anyways, I farmed those buggers for about 30 minutes, and in that time I killed 75 Frosthorn Rams (and their Kids) and gathered 21 Chilled Meat, for a drop ratio of 28%.

That’s not exactly a fantastic drop rate, but it’s hard to tell on such a short run, I might have been extremely unlucky.

I also got 3 or 4 Vendor Trash items for an approximate total of 10g and 1 Green for Disenchanting or the Auction House.

All in all, not a bad run, as my repairs were less than a Gold.

Farming Shoveltusk Flank in Howling Fjord

On the recommendation of regular reader and commenter Hammermond, I got it in my head to go farm Chilled meat in Howling Fjord.

Of course, Hammermond had recommended that I kill Rams in the northern part of Howling Fjord for their meat, but being the dyslexic person that I am (I’m not dyslexic for real, by the way) I was certain that I was going to be killing Shoveltusks

I had killed maybe a dozen before I realized that the drops weren’t going the way I wanted them to… Being eminently adaptable, I decided to write about the availability of Shoveltusk Flank.

Shoveltusk Flank is a Howling Fjord-specific delicacy that drops from all manners of Shoveltusk mobs in Howling Fjord, such as the Shoveltusk Forager, Shoveltusk Bull, Shoveltusk Calf, and more.

The aggreagated drop rate for Shoveltusk Flank is 54%, which is excellent. Don’t ask me which type of Shoveltusk drops the most meat, I have no idea.

I about 20 minutes of farming Shoveltusk Flank in Howling Fjord, I got 33 Shoveltusk Flank, which is not so bad.

Unfortunately my farming efforts were rudely interrupted by the need to farm some Goldclover for my daily Northrend Inscription Research cooldown, so I probably could have gotten more.

Farming Chunk O’ Mammoth in Borean Tundra

I have not yet leveled my cooking on any of my 10 characters to anywhere over 335, but I’ve been furiously stacking meats and other food reagents against the moment I decide that a leveling fiesta is in order.

Yesterday, I decided to consciously farm Chunk O’ Mammoths, because I know that it’s used in cool and useful recipes, as well as quite valuable on the Auction House.

I went farming Chunk O’ Mammoth in Borean Tundra, from Wooly Mammoths and Wooly Mammoth Calves. They proliferate around the D.E.H.T.A camp north of Valarian Stronghold. In 20 minutes, here is what I gathered:

45 Chunk O’ Mammoth
1 Green for Disenchanting of the Auction House

I got 45 Chunk O’ Mammoth from 77 mob kills, which translates in a 58% drop rate. I have read that the drop rate is even better in Sholazar Basin, but I find that hard to believe. I guess I’ll have to try it.

What is really fun about farming Chunks O’Mammoth from Wooly Mammoths in Borean Tundra, is that those buggers are really close together, which means you can kill a whole bunch of them in very little time.

Farming Chilled Meat in Dragonblight

This morning, I went farming Chilled Meat in Dragonblight. I suppose I should be a little more precise, Dragonblight is a large zone… This morning I went farming Chilled Meat all around the Ruby Dragonshrine and near Star’s Rest, in southwestern Dragonblight

The mobs I killed in my effort to acquire Chilled Meat are the following:

Snowfall Elk
Tundra Scavenger
Arctic Grizzly
Arctic Grizzly Cub

I had a few run-ins with some Hordies near Agmar’s Hammer. I dispatched them quickly, although it did flag Mordauk for PvP, not usually something I’m looking for when farming.

But anyways, that’s neither here nor there. In about 20 minutes, I killed 61 assorted mobs, and received 24 Chilled Meat, for a aggregated drop percentage of 39.34%.

I must say, that’s not bad at all. An almost 40% drop rate on anything is excellent.

However.

The mobs in that area are uncomfortably spaced out, and there were several occasions when I had to climb on my flying mount to got get some more, and that is not something you want to be doing when farming, as it really cuts down on the DPM (“drops per minute”).

I am told that clubbing seals in Howling Fjord is a faster and more profitable way to farm Chilled Meat, so I figure I will give it a try.

Succulent Clam Farming in Icecrown

Greetings and a very Happy New Year to you all! The holidays where wonderful and I truly enjoyed some WoW time with my fellow guild mates as they were all on vacation as well….serious leveling was had!

Chianna is now level 80 and has traveled far and wide. So how about some more Succulent meat, I ask myself? Surely, there must be more spots to get them besides the Tundra?? After some research, I found 2 spots that looked promising. The Oracles in Sholazar Basin and the Ravenous Jaws found in Icecrown. It has been said that the Oracles have a 76% drop rate for the Darkwater clams….what? no way! I immediately jumped on my mount and headed off , happy as lark. As I get to my spot, I realize, to my utter dismay, I’m FRIGGEN FRIENDLY with them!! How in the heck did that happen? I thought I was friendly with the Wolvar? Then I remembered an already forgotten about quest that made me switch sides. I even tried the old school “at war” tab, but Blizzard fixed that bug gosh darn it! So I will never know if the 76% drop rate is true or not.

I then set my sights on Icecrown and the Ravenous Jaws that is said to have a drop rate 46%.` Located in Icecrown, Onslaught harbor (coordinates 14,44)…extreme northwestern part, it wasn’t hard to find. Nasty humans in the harbor but the Ravenous Jaws are sharks and swim around in the bay. So bring along some breathing pots or in my case, I was armed with my trusty Mastercraft Kalu’ak Fishing Pole (equip gives underwater breathing! no more pots for me baby!)

Sad to say, the 46% is not the case…more like 22%…..and you can’t pull a bunch together to nab all at once…it’s one at a time…gggrrrr….not the best situation for farming to say the least. But it wasn’t all in vain thank goodness! One hour and 40min later with 100 shark kills under my belt, here’s the breakdown:

22 Succulent Clam meat – 47g
1 Northsea pearl -10g
5 Fillet of Icefin – 4g
1 Runic healing pot
Scroll of Stamina VII
Scroll of Strenght VII
Crystalsong Bracelts of Intellect ( DE for me ) -30g
Sleeted Longsword of the beast – 38g
Titanium Lockbox which held,
Skullcage of Eternal terror – 102g
Wolvar legguards of Nature Protection ( DE ) 30g
Shadow crystal – 2g
18g in cash from the sharks themselves
27g in vendor trash

Soooooooo….that adds up toooo….let’s see….carry the 4…apx value of 312g…not too shabby I must say. Certainly well worth the time, but I will continue to explore and see what wonders I may find next time… Until then, Happy Farming to you all!

Succulent Clam Farming in Northrend

Soooo, if you have read my last article, you have played with the Murloc suit and got too generally goof off and had a whale of time doing it hehe…. so on too, in my humble opinion, the easiest, most profitable farming ground I have seen thus far ( Please bear in mind that I am a sssllllooooowwww explorer and have yet to see every single zone, so don’t shoot me k? )…..

Clams, Clams, Clams!! Oh no, your thinking, not more Jaggel clam meat with the “occasional” small lustrous pearl….Yes, yes, I can read minds you know, but NO my friends, I’m talking about SUCCULENT clam meat! Yummy, yummy for your tummy and offers oh so more delights than the average clam! Yes you can fish for them but the Darkwater clam does drop in relative abundance when you kill the “bad, evil” murlocs in Winterfin retreat. But wait! There is more! Along with the meat, you will find a higher than average drop of ever sought after Northsea Pearls and Siren’s Tear. Both of the latter are in high demand as they are used in many of the professions. But wait! There is more! While you are running around killing the murlocs, take some time to pick up the “winterfin” clams while your at it ( they are scattered throughout the enemy territory)….those can be turned into the clam vendor to get, yup, you guessed it, Northsea Pearls and Siren’s tear! Wahoo! I must put a disclaimer, however, depending on what “time” ( meaning 7pm Friday night while everyone is doing the same thing as you might not be the best time ya know? )you are doing your farming session, those items may not be available at the exact time your ready to turn them in. But never fear, the “re-spawn” rate is fairly fast and you shouldn’t have to wait too long…heck, take another 10 mins and go gather just a few more for your next go around and be that much further along!

Here’s a break down:

Northsea Pearl = 30 winterfin clams
Siren’s Tear = 100 clams

I usually do 30-60 min farming session, with an overabundance of Winterfin clams and anywhere from 20-30 darkwater clams. So far, I haven’t had a session where I DIDN’T get a Northsea pearl and/or Siren’s tear from my darkwater clams as well ( in one case I got 3 Siren’s tear’s and 2 pearls! wahoo!!! )

Darnassian Bleu – make your own cheese?

Recently I have been leveling up a new character – a night elf druid. The other day, as I dealt with the Defias Brotherhood in Westfall collecting red bandanas, one of the Defias dropped some Darnassian Bleu.

Now, while Darnassian Bleu doesn’t have much in the way of benefits for a druid, as a Tauren Chef it made me think. Hmmm, wouldn’t it be great to know how to make your own cheese? Especially in the event of a life-as-we-know-it-is-ending apocalypse (such as the destruction of the Sunwell) that sort of knowledge would be nice to have.

During my research at the grocery store and on the internet I came across a site that gives easy to understand instructions for how to make your own cheese at home.

The recipes were written by David B. Fankhauser, Ph.D. who is Professor of Biology and Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati Clermont College in Batavia, Ohio. He also has a very informative site on homemade cheese (and so much more) titled Fankhauser’s Cheese Page.

He has cheese recipes, cheese videos, recipes for home made root beer, ginger ale, limoncello (an Italian aperitif liqueur,) and other items of interest too numerous to list. And yes, he does have a recipe for Blue cheese, though I don’t believe it is Darnassian Bleu.

His cheese recipes use rennet tablets from the Junket Company???????? ????? ????????, which sounds like a good idea. They are very inexpensive and apparently quite reliable. I bought some today, but I haven’t tried them out in any recipes yet.

Of course, if you are a purist, you can always do it the old-fashioned way and use a small piece of salted and dried abomasum. (According to Dr. Fankhauser, an abomasum is the last of the four chambers of the stomach of a ruminant animal. The abomasum from a suckling kid or calf was apparently very good for making cheese.)

Or, you can always buy cheese at the store . . .
