Farming Copper Ore in Elwynn Forest

My new Engineering profession has meant that I have had to do some farming again, even revisiting places that I’ve written about before.

The first place I had to go to was Elwynn Forest, for its abundance and cornucopia (the fabled “Horn of Plenty”) of Copper Ore. Even though my Engineer, Mandorall, is already well past using Copper to level his Engineering skill, I think that the next character I play, my Death Knight, will be a Blacksmith.

That means, of course, that a immense quantity of Ore will be needed, and even though my Death Knight will be a miner as well, I know from experience that Blacksmithing will burn through immense quantity of Ore.

As I’ve mentionned in my previous post, I use the Gatherer add-on to help with the farming process. It makes the whole thing a little bit more organized than the usual running around.

On the map below, you will see where the Copper Ore nodes appear in Elwynn Forest. I have also highlighted my preferred route for farming. Its not perfect, and I know I miss some, but it’s pretty efficient, and its the route I’ve taken to collect my record 185 Copper Ores in one hour of stress-free farming.

Click on the Elwynn Forest to see a larger view. As you can see, my route takes me West, south then East, North and then back to Stormwind.

Rinse and repeat!

Of course, you will need to enter the mines, and well as visit the island in the lake to the East, as it is usually ripe with Copper Ore.

Using this route and a fast mount, you can collect upwards of 100 Copper Ores an hour. Having a fast mount will not only let you go faster – obviously – but will allow you to beat low-levels to the nodes of Copper Ore. It’s not very nice, I know, but then again, you need the ore too, right?

Mageweave, Mithril… Engineering is FUN!

With my newly-minted Engineering skill now over 200, I have discovered that I now need both Mithril AND Mageweave to continue leveling my skill.

Mithril is one of the items that I dislike farming the most. It is never present in abundant quantities, no matter where you go, and the nodes are always scrawny and underfed – 2 or 3 drops at the most, rarely 4 and never 5. Or maybe I’m just unlucky.

Since I also needed Mageweave, I figured I would visit one of my old stomping grounds, The Hinterlands, in the mythical quest for both Mageweave AND Mithril Ore.

Before complaining about the drops, here is a quick recap of what I gathered in one non-intensive hour, rudely interrupted by the pressing need to watch House, MD at 8 o’clock.

62 Mageweave Cloth
30 Mithril Ore

and

13 Truesilver Ore
6 Thorium Ore
6 Iron Ore
2 Star Ruby
2 Arcane Crystals
1 Lesser Moonstone

At first glance, the Auction House value of all these items is roughly 125-150g. If I were selling them, I would be doing quite alright, thank you very much. Unfortunately, I am NOT selling them but using them to level my Engineering Skill.

Boy, I’m already starting to regret this.

I think I have enough materials to level my skill by 5 points, maybe 10, depending on what new recipes I can learn from the trainer.

Now, my good buddy Hladonar, feral Druid extraordinaire, recommended that I direct my attention to the Badlands for Mithril farming, as opposed to the Hinterlands.

Since in one hour’s time I can farm 150 Copper Ore in Elwynn Forest, 30 Mithril in an hour is horrible. Tomorrow I will go to the Badlands and see what I can do there, since I have no doubts whatsoever that I will need yet MORE Mithril.

As to Mageweave, well, it could be better. Farming an instance such as Zul’Farak would undoubtedly yield much more cloth, but then again no Mithril. So that’s what I get for trying to do two things at once.

I think I will be selling the gems, unless a Jewelcrafter needs them. They might pay the repairs to my armor caused by my untimely demise when I fell off a cliff running after what turned out to be a 2-drop Mithril node. Hmmm.

Easy Street Engineering Leveling

When I switched to from Jewelcrafting to Engineering, I reluctantly assumed that I would either have to farm lots of materials, or spend incredible amounts of WoW Gold to buy them.

Fortunately, months of leveling various characters, all of them with gathering professions, mean that I have a lot of disposable income, and the idea of spending some moolah on FINALLY leveling a crafting skill to its ultimate pinacle is quite enjoyable.

But then, a marvelous thing happened…

Do you remember the little “lost mail” glitch that occured a few days before the release of the Wrath of Lich King expansion? Well, it turns out that I had farmed quite intensely before, and that just this very morning, a WHOLE lot of materials just showed in my mailbox.

And I’m not talking a few bronze bars… I’m talking MANY HUNDREDS of Copper Ore, Tin Ore, Gold Ore, Silver Ore, Iron Ore, Mithril, gems, various leathers…

As far as I can figure it out, and I’m using a leveling guide, so this is nothing but an educated guess, I have enough stuff to level at least 150 points in Engineering in a single, glorious night of Engineering!

So I’ll go do that, and keep you posted.

Is Engineering the new Blacksmithing?

When I started playing Mandorall, my Paladin, about 2 years ago, I picked Mining and Blacksmithing as my primary professions.

Now if you’ve read my previous articles – look under Professions – you’ll know what I think about Blacksmithing. To make a long story a little less long, it is a tough, unprofitable and ultimately pointless profession that will suck you soul dry. That’s saying nothing about the state of your wallet than a [insert Dan Rather quaint "Texan" expression here].

So a few months ago, I abandoned the futile blacksmithing experience, and switched to Jewelcrafting. I figured, what’s a more manly profession for a tough, virile Paladin than Jewelcrafting?

Just kidding. The Guild needed a Jewelcrafter, and I gave up on that one, too. Sorry guys.

So anyways, this very morning, I dropped Jewelcrafting and went for a profession that is rumored to not only be easy to level, but also relatively inexpensive as well as rewarding: Engineering!

Just kidding again. I heard the exact opposite. But I guess I’ll find out soon enough. My skill is up to about 115 now and I’ve only spend about 10g on it.

On a secondary note, I did some farming for Copper Ore in Elwynn Forest, and I gathered about 100 in 30 minutes, even better than last time. If I wasn’t using that copper ore to level my skill, I could turn it into Copper Bars and sell them on the Auction House for a whopping 17g per stack, as of November 30th, 2008.

Just something to keep in mind. Anyways, I’ll let you know how the Engineering thing goes.
