Adder’s Tongue Herbalism in Sholazar Basin

Adder’s Tongue is one of the three herbs that grows naturally in Sholazar Basin. Adder’s Tongue can be used by high-level Alchemists for potions and Elixirs, as well as by high level Scribes (Inscription).

This morning, I had in my mind when I woke up to do a grand gathering tour of Netherstorm and see what grows there, as well as discover the map, get the achievement, etc. I kind of like Netherstom, as it is very otherwordly, but alas, all my carefully laid plans were foiled by the dreaded server maintenance.

Turns out that I had left Mordauk parked at the Nesingwary Camp in Sholazar Basin after yesterday’s Crystallized Water affair, so my time was extremely limited.

In only 14 minutes of farming Adder’s Tongue in Sholazar Basin, I managed to gather 25 Adder’s Tongue, which is very good.

Since I stop for the other herbs, I also gathered:

25 Tiger Lily
18 Goldclover
2 Deadnettle
10 Crystallized Life

I did not take a screenshot of the map this morning – it was too late by the time I remembered I should, however, you can read my article about Herbalism in Sholazar Basin. Incidentally, I just realized it doesn’t have a map!

Darn it. I guess that will be my mission tomorrow!

Farming Tiger Lily in Borean Tundra

The endless quest for more Snowfall Ink to help my Inscription skill progress – it is now at 445 – takes me to all sorts of places, always looking for an abundance of herbs.

This morning, my perigrinations took me to Borean Tundra, where I seemed to recall a magical place where the Tiger Lily sprouted from the ground even before you were done gathering it, or close enough.

That place was supposedly the lake right in the middle of Borean Tundra. So this morning I made my merry way there, and gathered… Here is what I got, in 30 minutes:

25 Tiger Lily
8 Goldclover
10 Deadnettle
17 Crystallized Life

As you can see, in terms of farming Tiger Lily, Borean Tundra may not exactly be the very best place. The drop rate in general is not bad, and the fact that all the Tiger Lily spawn points are very concentrated in the same are makes it convenient, but overall, as far as herb gathering, this is not the best.

Just to help refresh your memory, here the the Borean Tundra Herb Map:

Now a distinction must be made between types of gatherers. I am an Scribe – I have the Inscription profession – so any Northrend Herb is the same to me: they all mill down to Azure Pigment and sometimes to Icy Pigment as well.

So for a Scribe, gathering Tiger Lily is pointless – much better off gathering Talandra’s Rose in Zul’Drak, or Adder’s Tongue in Sholazar Basin.

But for an Alchemist, who actually needs Tiger Lily for a recipe, then Borean Tundra might now be a bad place to look.

Farming Herbs in Storm Peaks

Even since Storm Peaks has been pacified by the Guild a week or so ago, it’s now a much nicer place to farm.

No seriously, I know that our killing Loken has no incidence on the rest of the Zone, but anyways.

What drew me to Storm Peaks in the first place to farm is the over-abundance of Herb nodes. Of course, that can be deceptive, since maybe the respawn rate could be horrible, or there could be a regular, incredibly large number of farmers.

Fortunately for Mordauk, this was not the case. I only encountered a couple of other players farming the same thing as me, and it was a very polite affair. For your convenience, I am including a Storm Peaks Herbs Map:

As you can surely see, my claim of the concentration of herb nodes is not exagerated in the slightest. Here is was I got from farming herbs in Storm Peaks for 35 minutes:

48 Lichbloom
29 Icethorn
27 Crystallized Life
3 Frost Lotus

While this is technically not spectacular, what really was was what I got when I milled down the herbs: 11 Icy Pigment – which leads me to think that the drop rates have indeed been fiddled with.

On a slightly sour note, what really annoyed me about farming herbs in Storm Peaks was the fact that there are mountains everywhere, and that makes is hard to get from here to there. If I didn’t have a flying mount, I would have chewing the carpet out of frustration!

Overall, farming herbs in Storm Peaks was a worthwhile endeavor, and I will certain be back!

Farming Herbs in Zul’Drak

I’ve been farming herbs in Zul’Drak this morning. Turns out that I was out of Icy Pigment, a required ingredient to perform my daily ritual of Northrend Inscription Research.

I’d never been farming herbs in Zul’Drak, indeed the map was not even half uncovered. I found it an excellent place to farm, for several reasons.

First off, the place is DEAD. Quite literally, there was (1) other person there, and they might have been questing for all I know. Either way, the herb node respawn rate should more than cover (2) people farming, if it comes to that.

Also, the quantity and quality of nodes is quite impressive. In the south western part, Talandra’s Rose nodes are pretty bunched up, over a relatively large area, which means that you almost always see the next node as you are gathering, which is refreshingly different than almost any other place in Northrend.

In the north eastern part, the Frozen Herbs node drop mostly Goldclover, which is fine, and they are also pretty concentrated. Unfortunately they did not seem to spawn nearly as fast, but this might just have been bad luck on my part, since I only did a 30 minute farming run.

Here’s what the Zul’Drak Herb Map looks like:

I’m not going to recommend a route for this one, since there are so many nodes. Just criss-cross the south-western part until you run out of nodes, then go to the north eastern part and do the same thing.

Rinse and repeat until you bags are full of herbs or you get bored, or both, which is more likely!

Here is what I gathered in a very short 30-minute herb-farming run in Zul’Drak:

13 Crystallized Life
30 Goldclover
56 Talandra’s Rose
20 Deadnettle
6 Tiger Lily

All in all, after milling the various herbs I got 11 Icy Pigment for my effort, which I think is spectacular. I even leads me to ponder as whether the drop rates for the Icy Pigment might have been tweaked, since it never used to be so good.

Anyways, I’m not complaining, as my Northrend Inscription Research materials requirements are now taken care of for the week!

Farming Deadnettle in Howling Fjord

Deadnettle is a valuable herb, found as a drop in all Northrend Herbs. Its basically the Swiftthistle of Northrend.

By itself, it is used by Alchemists for various high level Flasks and Elixirs, and the Indestructible Alchemist Stone.

For Scribes (Inscriptors) such as myself, Deadnettle is just another Herb to be milled down to Azure Pigment, and if you’re lucky, Icy Pigment.

It seems that Deadnettle has a slightly better chance to mill down to Icy Pigment than other Northrend herbs, although that might be completely anectodal, so this morning I figured I would do a little run to gather it.

The thing is, since Deadnettle is a drop from gathering other herbs, you can’t really plan for it. You just gather whatever you can and hope for the best.

In 30 minutes for farming Deadnettle in Howling Fjord, I got:

31 Deadnettle
36 Goldclover
13 Tiger Lily
24 Crystallized Life

This basically means that I needed to gather 1.58 other Herbs for every Deadnettle I received which in my humble opinion is not bad at all.

Since I was in the area, I also took the opportunity to do the Steel Gate Patrol Daily Quest, which sees you climb aboard one of the gnomish planes and shoot down Gargoyles. One of the quickest and most fun-per-minute to be had in Howling Fjord! Also good for 275 Explorer’s League Reputation Points, in my case because my Death Knight is human and gets that nifty 10% rep bonus.

For you non-human characters out there, 250 Reputation Points it is.

All in all, I’m very satisfied with my little 30-minute Howling Fjord Herb run. I must admit that I’ve not checked the Auction House value of what I gathered, not have I milled it – server maintenance “oblige” – however 80 Herbs in 30 minutes is more than decent.

On top of that, I also got 2 Eternal Life and 4 Crystallized Life, for which I have no use at the moment, but that I’m furiously stacking in my Bank against a future need.

Herbalism in Sholazar Basin

Just like I did with Mandorall yesterday, I did a timed farming run in Sholazar Basin this morning, but this time for herbs.

I have bought the Artisan Flying Skill as well as Cold Weather Flying for Mordauk as well, and that has seriously depleted my funds, so looking for herbs in Sholazar Basin seemed like a good way to make it up.

I could only do a 35 minutes herb farming run this morning, on account that both I and my significant other are feeling under the weather – must be some bug going around. I’ll spare you the more gruesome details.

In 35 minutes of flying around in Sholazar Basin, I gathered:

54 Adder’s Tongue
35 Tiger Lily
11 Goldclover
14 Deadnettle
4 Frost Lotus
3 Eternal Life

Now, the Eternal life is almost worthless, on account that Crystalized Life drops very, very regularly, however the Frost Lotus is still very valuable, since it is used in high-level Alchemy recipes.

The real kicker is this: I milled the herbs – I am a Scribe, after all – and got the following:

61 Azure Pigment
6 Icy Pigment

The 61 Azure Pigment will make 30 Ink of the Sea, and the Icy Pigment will make 3 very valuable Snowfall Ink.

Overall, in that little 35 minute farming period, I’m reasonably sure that I gathered the equivalent of nearly 500g of materials on my server’s Auction House. Not bad!

Farming Herbs in Dragonblight

Weekends are when I level my characters, as opposed to weekdays, when I farm. My Death Knight, Mordauk, is now level 75 – put that in your pipe and smoke it, Fluffmuffin! and he is now questing in Dragonblight.

Of course, he is massively overpowered for the area, which makes leveling quite a bit quicker.

It’s also an excellent occasion for the Herbalist Mordauk to farm for some level appropriate herbs instead of the Briarthorn and other low-level herbs he’s had to deal with recently.

Here are some of the herbs that can be gathered in Dragonblight. This is not an exhaustive list – or at least I don’t think so – since I was not concentrating of farming:

Goldclover
Tiger Lily
Talandra’s Rose
Deadnettle

Here is a quick Dragonblight herb map:

As you can see, most herb nodes are concentrated in the west, around Star’s Rest. All herbs in Dragonblight come in the form of [Frozen Herbs], which mean that, just like the proverbial box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.

Herbs are also relatively plentiful in the northeastern and southeastern portions of Dragonblight.

I wasn’t paying attention to farming today, and I still managed to gather a little bit under 4 stacks of various herbs, which will be very useful this week when I do my “Northrend Inscription Research“.

Herbalism in Redridge Mountains

Farming herbs in Redridge Mountains was, for me, an intensely frustrating experience. The whole place is full of mountains – obviously – and the old saying “you can’t get from there to here” take a whole new, crisp sense.

I did a little run yesterday morning, about 45 minutes before going to work. I farmed the following herbs:

26 Mageroyal
37 Earthroot
25 Briarthorn
22 Bruiseweed
6 Swiftthistle

The whole farming experience was rife with situations where I saw a potential gather on the map, only to discover that I had to go extremely out of my way to gather it, landing in a spot where all I got was a miserable Earthroot and was far removed from other spawn nodes. Really annoying, as far as farming goes.

As usual, I milled down the herbs for their pigments, to be used in Inscription. Here’s what I got:

40 Dusky Pigment
18 Alabaster Pigment
4 Verdant Pigment

Not exactly a fantastic haul. I’ll take it, and for 45 minutes, it wasn’t bad, but the whole experience was in general disagreable. One positive point: I got another Blue, [Magician's Mantle] which I posted right away on the Auction House for 50g.

It was sold by the time I got home from work, so I guess someone somewhere was in a spending mood.

I have the feeling that Duskwood will be a LOT better for farming herbs, which is what I’ll do next. I’ll also be adding a map of Redridge Mountains as well as an herb farming route shortly, but be warned: it’s pretty sparse.

In short, farming herbs in Redridge Mountains is more pleasant than getting a root canal on an infected tooth without anasthetic… but not by much.

Westfall Herbalism Map and Route

Waking up at an ungoldy hour every weekday morning does have its advantages: it makes the day feel much longer. It also allows me do to a little farming! Farming is ideal for those few hours when I’m up before the sun. It doesn’t really require thinking or attention, besides attention to the scanner, because I make sure to farm in areas where the mobs have really no chance to kill me, even if I leave my toon unattended for 10 minutes while I get yet more coffee.

So in this spirit, I made a 45-minutes (plus coffee breaks) run for herbs in Westfall yesterday. It was an ideal time, as no one else was there, so I did quite well.

For starters, here is my Wesfall Herbs Map:

As you can see from the map, Herbs in Westfall are pretty evenly distributed. I had to do some pretty creative thinking in order to come up with a route.

Basically, anywhere you go in Westfall is likely to have herbs. It’s just a matter of finding a route that doesn’t overlap with itself too much, as well as giving time for the herbs to respawn before you get to a certain point again.

Here is what I gathered in my 45-minutes Westfall herbs timed run:

26 Briarthorn
23 Bruiseweed
38 Silverleaf
31 Peacebloom
9 Earthroot
13 Swiftthistle
8 Mageroyal

For you Scribes – Inscriptors – out there, here what all those herbs milled down to:

35 Dusky Pigment
37 Alabaster Pigment
4 Verdant Pigment

Westfall is a pretty strange place as far as herbs are concerned, since it is sort of an “in-between” place. Lots of Peacebloom and Silverleaf, but not as much as Elwynn Forest, and not as much Briarthorn and Bruiseweed as the next map, which should be Duskwood.

Swamp of Sorrows Herbalism Map

I have a dream… A dream where I can have all the maps, of all the Zones of World of Warcraft, mapped out for your mining and herbalism enjoyment and profit… A dream where all the best mining routes and the best herbalism routes are clearly marked out on those maps…

Nothing happens overnight, or without costs. So today I present my Swamp of Sorrows Herbalism Map, with a clearly marked out route. I also spent about an hour there yesterday, gathering herbs in one of my tried, tested and true timed farming runs.

Here is the Swamp of Sorrows Herbalism Map:

I fly into Swamp of Sorrows by way of Nethergarde Keep, in the Blasted Lands, so I start my run in the South Western part of Swamp of Sorrows, just west of Stonard.

I ride West and basically just follow the mountains all the way around until I’ve made a full circle, then repeat. Its worth nothing, and as you can see from the map, that there is a heavy concentration of Herbalism nodes immediately north of the entry point, so spending a little more time there is usually wise.

Here is a list of what I have gathered in roughly 55 minutes of farming herbs in Swamp of Sorrows:

75 Blindweed
20 Khadgar’s Whisker
12 Kingsblood
17 Goldthorn
11 Fadeleaf
20 Liferoot

It’s worth noting that I did my farming run at about 6pm server time – 9pm here. This is NOT the ideal time for farming. In a perfect world, you would have done this at 5am on a Monday morning, or some other time where it is likely that no one else would be there.

As luck – or lack thereof – would have it, there was AT LEAST one other person farming herbs when I was there, which I figure, from experience, cut down my gathering by about 30%.

For you Scribes out there (Scribes are Inscriptors) I have milled down the herbs so you can get an idea of what an hour farming in Swamp of Sorrows will give you. The herbs listed above milled down to the following:

42 Violet Pigment
6 Ruby Pigment
28 Emerald Pigment
21 Golden Pigment
2 Burnt Pigment
3 Indigo Pigment

If you have chosen the Inscription Profession, I personally guarantee that you will spend a lot of time in Swamp of Sorrows, or spend a LOT of money buying the herbs or pigments from the Auction House. Hopefully this little list will give you an idea of what to expect!
