Borean Leather from Wooly Rhinos in Borean Tundra

I guess the title says it all. This morning, just before the server unceremoniously dumped me, I went farming Borean Leather from Wooly Rhinos is Borean Tundra.

Allanona, my Skinner Night Elf Druid, was parked in Dalaran, and because of the damned “Server Maintenance” I only had 12 minutes or so of farming. Nonetheless, here are my results. I think that that will scale well because the areas marked on the map are absolutely creeping with Rhinos, meaning that you shouldn’t run out of stuff to kill.

Here is what I gathered in 12 minutes of farming Wooly Rhinos for thir Borean Leather

34 Borean Leather Scraps
4 Borean Leather
24 Rhino Meat

I also had 39 vendor trash grays that will more than pay for my repairs. Unless you die, they always do. Now as you can see, the drop rate for actual Borean Leather – as opposed to Borean Leather Scraps – is pretty terrible.

The was only for 12 minutes. In the next few days I will endeavor to try again, and with a larger sample.

In Borean Tundra, the Wooly Rhinos come in (3) varieties. They are:

Wooly Rhino Bull
Wooly Rhino Matriarch
Wooly Rhino Calf

Of the three, only the Wooly Rhino Bull is aggressive, the others are neutral, which makes gathering them up for AoE a little annoying.

Here is a little map of Borean Tundra, showing where you can find the Wooly Rhinos:

As you can see, the concentrations Wooly Rhinos are conveniently located near both Faction starting areas in Borean Tundra.

A word of caution, when farming the Northern area (near Warsong Hold), you WILL encounter Nedar, Lord of Rhinos. He’s not terribly difficult to kill – he’s a 72 Elite with about 19k hit points – but if he catches you after you’ve just slaughtered a bunch of Rhinos, the odds are good that he’s gonna open a can of whoop-ass on you.

So always keep your health at maximum and heal between every group when farming Rhinos near Warsong Hold in Borean Tundra, whether it be for their Borean Leather or their Rhino Meat.

Borean Leather in Borean Tundra

My Paladin is a miner, and he’s level 80. My Death Knight is a Herbalist and is level 80.

I could go on a long-winded gripe about how casual players such as myself don’t get the best gear in the game because we can’t spend the time raiding.

I could say that my money is just as good as anyone else, I should have access to the same content, and especially the same gear.

I could say that there should be a way to players that don’t have hours to spend waiting for groups to form to get the same gear as those who do, by soloing something – or many somethings.

I could say all those things, but I won’t.

As you know, I enjoy farming with the highest level and/or most powerful character I have. It reduces the downtime, and gives me something to do with my maxed-out toons.

Thing is, I have a miner and an herbalist – but no skinner.

So this weekend I really took the bull by the horns, so to speak, and started leveling Allanona, my much-maligned yet strangely attractive (female) Night Elf Druid.

She is now in Borean Tundra, at level 73 or 74. I have been doing all the Quests there that I can in an effort to level quickly, and I discovered that there is quite a bit of Borean Leather to be had in Borean Tundra, as well as, apparently, a few [Arctic Fur] – but not many.

The Wooly Mammoths are well as the Rhinos can be skinned for their Borean Leather, and the Rhinos in particular are apt to be gathered in a big bunch and mauled to death in Dire Bear Form.

Tomorrow morning, I will start my timed farming runs for Borean Leather. They are bound to be fun, since they will actually involve killing mobs, and not only will I be getting tons of Borean Leather, I’ll also get experience points!

The Best Farming Skills Combinations

It’s a well-known secret that if you want to make lots of WoW Gold, and buy yourself all sorts of shiny in-game knick-knacks and gizmos, you must have gathering professions.

Gathering professions, or Farming professions, allow you to gather resources and sell them at inflated prices to other players. These other players did not take my advice – God bless ‘em – and have crafting professions, meaning that they must spend a great deal of resources buying the materials to level them up.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not *exactly* knocking crafting professions. I even have a few of them myselves. The point is, you must already be rich if you’re hoping to level them up to their ultimate potential, and if you’re not already rich and trying to level it, it will take you a heck of a long time, during which you will be poor.

So what kind of resources are there to gather that you may be able to sell to other players?

They are:

Herbs – Herbalism, for Alchemy and Inscription
Ore – Mining, for Blacksmithing, Jewelcrafting and Engineering
Cloth – For tailors, but eh, no skill required
Leather – Skinning, for Leatherworking and other professions to a lesser degree

In my opinion, the two best combinations of Gathering or Farming Professions are:

Skinning and Herbalism
Skinning and Mining

There is one major reason for that: both Herbalism and Mining rely on a scanner – in the top-right minimap – to alert you to the presence of resources, and you can only have one on at a time.

That means that if you had both Herbalism AND Mining, you would be missing out on resources, one way or the other.

By chosing either Herbalism or Mining as well as Skinning, you can have your scanner up all the time and never miss a resource node, and skin the leather right off the backs of whatever beasts you kill, no scanner needed for that!

So which is better, Herbalism or Mining? On my server, Herbalism is hotter right now, I never have any trouble selling my Herbs. I cannot say the same thing for Ore, and this is corroborated by a few Guildies that are Miners. That being said, it may be different on your server, depending on the crafting flavor of the month.

I recommend asking around, and especially doing a little research on the Auction House to see what is moving and what’s not. Having the Auctioneer add-on installed will really help you there.

Herbalism and Mining in Sholazar Basin

My Paladin, Mandorall, is now level 77 and questing in Sholazar Basin. I didn’r really know where to go after Grizzly Hills, and I found the Troll area too dark and depressing, so when some Mage in Dalaran suggested I visit Sholazar Basin, I jumped on the occasion.

Sholazar Basin offers the farmer countless opportunities. To put things simply, I managed to farm HUNDREDS of saronites ores without even meaning to.

These were just the nodes I found during the course of questing, without really looking for them.

Here is what miners can find in Sholazar Basin

Saronite Nodes
Rich Saronite Nodes
Titanium Nodes (Jackpot!)

These ores are very, very valuable, and sold on the Auction House, they could mean hundreds of gold without much work. Most nodes can be found all around the periphery of the map, as well as around the pillars. If you have a flying mount, then you should be able to farm these mining nodes quite quickly.

Please remember that ore nodes can and do appear everywhere, so make sure you do a regular sweep and not just go around in circles!

You can also use them to level Engineering or Blacksmithing, which is more rewarding if not nearly as profitable.

Herbalists can find:

Goldclover
Tiger Lily
Adder’s Tongue

I have not played there yet with an Herbalist (soon, soon…) so I can’t really vouch for the quality of the farming grounds, but if mining is any indication, there should be enough herbs there to satisfy even the most demanding Alchemist or Inscriptor.

Sholazar Basin is also full of beasts, Rhinos, Cobras, Mammoths and Crocolisks, all of which can be skinned. And since Hemet Nesingwary’s there with his usual quests, you know the getting will be good for you skinners out there.

Just a note – the mammoths drop [Chunks O' Mammoth] with surprising regularity. This is a piece of meat that can be cooked as Mammoth Meal for a very interesting Attack Power and Stamina bonus for (1) hours.

As long you are in Sholazar Basin, you should make sure you do the Frenzyheart Tribe quests to the South. They are straightforward hunting quests for the most part, and are well written and funny.

[Arctic Fur] from a Proto-Whelp in Ember Clutch!

My Druid, Allanona, has now climbed the social ladder all the way to level 69… Not quite the previously-exalted 70, but hey, it works well enough.

Her DPS is good enough that she can take down single-handledly everything that Howling Fjord has put in her way so far, and with quests awarding over 20,000 experience points apiece, she’ll be at 70 soon.

One thing that bothered me playing with Mandorall, my oh-so-powerful Paladin, was that he’d be killing all these beasts and could never skin one of them, leaving behing all that valuable Borean Leather, not to mention the Leather Scraps and possibly even the very Blue [Arctic Fur].

Well, with Allanona, the problem is solved. She is exclusively a gatherer, having the skinning and herbalism skills.

I have not had the chance to play very much with her, as I only got to Westgarde yesterday. I’ve started doing all the Embler Cluth quests, and last night I was rewarded with an [Arctic Fur]! Of course, I don’t have a Leatherworker of a high enough level to use it, but I will soon enough.

Either that or I’ll browbeat a guildie into crafting stuff for me!

Incidentally, I’ve discovered that anyone – not only Leatherworkers – can transform 5 Borean Leather Scraps into one Borean Leather. That is quite handy, as it will help considerably in keeping my ever-more-crowded bags just a little neater!

Leatherworking at 420 – An Expensive Order!

With my Leatherworking skill as reached 420, I have discovered that I now need either Nerubian Chitin or Jormungar Scales in large quantities to continue leveling my skill.

After a quick visit to the WoW forums and sites, I discovered a prime farming spot for Jormungar Scales; the Hibernal Cavern in Storm Peaks.

This cavern is filled with Ravenous Jormungars (level 79-80 beasts) and a few Icemaw Bear (level 79-80 beasts). The Ravenous Jormungars are obviously the ones who drops the aforementioned Jormungar Scales when skinned.

In 1 hour of running around the caves, I farmed:

33 Jormungar Scales
93 Borean Leathers
3 Arctic Furs

and

64 Worm Meats
9 Chilled Meats
3 Green items (level 77+)
40G 42S 42C

At first glance, the Auction House value of all these items is roughly 800G . If I were selling them, I would be doing quite alright, thank you very much. Unfortunately, I am NOT selling them but using them to level my Leatherworking Skill.

I’ll probably disenchant the greens and some of the Worm Meats. Just to cover some of my repair bills.

Unfortunatly that was only enough to level my Leatherworking for 2 points.

So after another quick look at the WoW forums and sites I selected the Argent Dawn Vanguard area in Icecrown to farm some Nerubian Chitin.

What makes it somewhat easy to farm is the fact that the area is crawling with Argent Dawn Soldiers that will fight the Forgotten Depths Acolytes (level 77-78 beasts) for you. All you have to do is tag them and let the Argent Dawn Soldiers do the rest.

In 1 hour of farming I got:

29 Nerubian Chitins
85 Borean Leathers
1 Arctic Fur

and

38 Forstweave cloth
32G 12S 76C

On the Auction House this would be worth about 700G. Again a lot of potantial gold to invest in my Leatherworking. **Sigh**, oh well…

This was enough to level my Leatherworking by another big 2 points.

I think I might slit my wrists anytime now…

Now the important thing to mention is that this area is part of the new phasing system, so the Forgotten Depths Acolytes will disapear when you complete the Argent Dawn quests. So be warned if you want to keep farming them, don’t complete the The Last Line Of Defense quest.

Rugged Leather Farming in Ice Thistle Hills

I used to do a LOT more cloth farming, but it seems that leveling Leatherworking up to 375 is even more a pain in the … behind — let’s say — than Tailoring was, so most of my farming is now directed towards finding good leather.

There are all kinds of leathers – light, medium, heavy, thick, rugged, and of course knothide. My efforts on this day were directed towards finding Rugged Leather, so I headed to my favorite place in all of Azeroth, Winterspring.

Now Winterspring has been good to me. If you’ll read my previous posts, you’ll learn that I got several epic drops there, as well as blues and a lot of greens. But those are incidental. What I REALLY like in Winterspring is the whole Ice Thistle Yeti gang, the Yetis, the Ice Thistle Patriarchs and Ice Thistle Matriarchs.

What I love the most about them is their unobtrusive but quick respawn rate.

Tonight, taking my newly-minted level 70, Grunman, a Shaman of (none whatsoever) renown, I spent twent-five minutes in the Hills and Cave due southeast of Everlook. TWENTY-FIVE MINUTES. You read correctly. In that period of time, I managed to acquire 50 Rugged Leathers as well as 21 Thick Leathers, from an assortment of Yetis, Matriarchs and Patriarchs.

Now I did not count them, but logic says that I mauled to death exactly 71 mobs. In 25 minutes, that’s 21.17 seconds per mob killed, and I’m including the travel time, the tedious mana regeneration, and an annoying but essential bathroom break.

Those that are mathematically inclined, such as not me, would calculate that is a MINIMUM of 120 Rugged Leathers per hour. That’s hard to beat.

If you are not a Leatherworker — a decision I am starting to regret, by the way — you could sell these fine leathers for about 10 gold per stack on the Auction House. 60 gold an hour, plus the Thick leather (which is worth about 4g per stack) plus the gray vendor trash, plus whatever interesting drop you get, that is pretty good.

Or you could use the leather leveling your Leatherworking by less than 10 points. You choose
