Herbalism is used as a sister skill to both Alchemy and Inscription, and both require relatively impressive quantities of Herbs to Level.

Moreover, once you reach a certain level in Inscription, you will acquire the skill “Minor Inscription Research”, which is on a 20-hour cooldown and that you should – must – do everyday, as it is the only way to learn how to create “Minor Glyphs”.

Minor Inscription Research requires Moonglow Ink, which is created from Alabaster Pigment, which in turn is extracted from very low-level Herbs, namely Peacebloom, Silverleaf and Earthroot. This means that even at a higher level, you will need to revisit Elwynn Forest occasionally to gahter these Herbs.

Here is the Herbalism map for Elwynn Forest:

As you can see, there is no real clear distribution of the Herbs, as they seem to spawn ‘randomly’ a little everywhere.

There are a few things to remember to maximize your herb gathering in Elwynn Forest, and anywhere else Peacebloom, Silverleaf and Earthroot spawn:

Peacebloom spawns in open grass, usually far from trees or hillocks;

Silverleaf always spawns next to trees;

Earthroot always spawns on hillocks or in the first few yards of the bottom of a mountain.

Keeping this in mind, you should be able to maximize your Herb-gathering route through Elwynn Forest. For example, you may choose to follow the mountains to the north, going east, gathering Earthroot, then looping back down next to the river for other herbs. Make sure you criss-cross the area thoroughly, since the Peacebloom and Silverleaf are usually in the middle, away from recognizable landmarks on the map.

I did a very short run this morning when I went out to take the screenshot, and in 20 minutes or so gathered about 50 assorted herbs, which translated to 32 Alabaster Pigments. This will allow me to continue my Minor Inscription Research for at least a week.

My new Engineering profession has meant that I have had to do some farming again, even revisiting places that I’ve written about before.

The first place I had to go to was Elwynn Forest, for its abundance and cornucopia (the fabled “Horn of Plenty”) of Copper Ore. Even though my Engineer, Mandorall, is already well past using Copper to level his Engineering skill, I think that the next character I play, my Death Knight, will be a Blacksmith.

That means, of course, that a immense quantity of Ore will be needed, and even though my Death Knight will be a miner as well, I know from experience that Blacksmithing will burn through immense quantity of Ore.

As I’ve mentionned in my previous post, I use the Gatherer add-on to help with the farming process. It makes the whole thing a little bit more organized than the usual running around.

On the map below, you will see where the Copper Ore nodes appear in Elwynn Forest. I have also highlighted my preferred route for farming. Its not perfect, and I know I miss some, but it’s pretty efficient, and its the route I’ve taken to collect my record 185 Copper Ores in one hour of stress-free farming.

Click on the Elwynn Forest to see a larger view. As you can see, my route takes me West, south then East, North and then back to Stormwind.

Rinse and repeat!

Of course, you will need to enter the mines, and well as visit the island in the lake to the East, as it is usually ripe with Copper Ore.

Using this route and a fast mount, you can collect upwards of 100 Copper Ores an hour. Having a fast mount will not only let you go faster – obviously – but will allow you to beat low-levels to the nodes of Copper Ore. It’s not very nice, I know, but then again, you need the ore too, right?

Elwynn Forest is my favorite place. Certainly not for the quality of the drops, which are pretty bad, but for the “feel” of it.

When I started playing, not knowing anyone or anything, it felt like Elwynn Forest was a magical place, full of mysteries, dangerous monsters, and wonder… and a bunch of high level characters having a go at it in the middle of Goldshire, yelling obscenities at each other.

Before discovering the wondrous Auction House, collecting the equivalent of a single silver piece of a bunch of dead Defias Thugs seemed like a lot of money. And that’s about what you’ll get if you kill mobs for the cash drops in Elwynn Forest. It’s bad, real bad.

But Mandorall did not go back to his old stomping grounds to part Goblins from their coppers. He went back for the mining.

As far as farming goes, the only thing Elwynn Forest is good for is mining. I’m sure that if you’re an Herbalist, you could pick up loads of Earthroot, Silverleaf and Peacebloom, and with the Auction House prices the way they are, they would sell, but that was not the aim of this exercise.

Mandorall is a miner, and in 55 minutes of farming, he managed to collect… sit down for that… 185 Copper Ores. Of course, being a Paladin, Mandorall has a wicked fast land mount, but even then, that’s an impressive amount.

Conservatively priced, that’s about 20 gold’s worth of ore to sell at the Auction House. If you area blacksmith just starting out, Elwynn Forest is the place for you. The respawn rates on the mining nodes are quick, and there is little competition for them, at least on my server.

So here is the breakdown of what was collected, in 55 minutes of play time:

• Cash loot: 5s 87c
• Vendor Trash: 6s 11c
• Copper Ore: 185
• Rough Stone: 101
• Shadowgem: 3
• Malachite: 3
• Linen Cloth: 33
• Minor Healing Potions: 10

and…

• 1 Silver Bar  (Chest)
• 5 Small Spider Legs
• 5 Stringy Wolf Meat (yuck)

For the record, I did not run after mobs a single time, although I did loot every single one that I killed. I only did in those that attacked me either while mining, or on my way to mining.

I guessed that if I had killed all the mobs that I saw – and I certainly could have, Elwynn Forest is no great challenge – I would have collected a lot more Linen Cloth, cooking mats and cash loot, but that wasn’t the point.

I had written an article a while back about low-level gold farming, and I stated that by running Elwynn Forest an hour a day, 5 days a week, you could easily make 25 gold a week on the Auction House. Turns out, thanks to the inflationary policies of the Central Bank – Blizzard – you can actually EASILY make 100 gold a week doing the same thing.
