Herbalism in Grizzly Hills: Maybe Not.

As I’m certain you have noticed, Mordauk and Mandorall, my 2 level 80 characters are on a Grand Tour of Northrend, chronicling their loot for your pleasure.

It only makes sense that I some point, Mordauk the Herbalist would make his way to Grizzly Hills, leaving a trail of bloody destruction behind him, as well as a lot of uprooted herbs.

Let’s make one thing perfectly clear: if you are looking to actually GATHER some herbs, and not just fly around, enjoying the view, then I heartily recommend farming anywhere else than Grizzly Hills.

Farming Herbs in Grizzly Hills is like getting teeth pulled, but without the mellow novacaine buzz.

Have a loot at the pitiful and embarassing Grizzly Hills herb map:

At first glance, it seems like there would be some Tiger Lily on the riverbanks, and sure enough, there are a few. But the concentrations of herbs are too few an far between to make this Zone anything by flyover country when gathering herbs.

Here is what I got in my traditional 30 minutes of farming herbs in Grizzly Hills:

20 Tiger Lily
19 Goldclover
14 Deadnettle
19 Crystallized Life

Shameful. But at least my theory that Crystallized Life and Deadnettle only drop from real, live, non-Frozen herbs is absolutely confirmed.

It’s too bad about Grizzly Hills being such a crappy place to farm herbs. I mean, the place is kind of nice, there’s lots of forest and green areas where one would think that the herbalism spawn nodes would sprout like acne on a teenager.

Unfortunately, that is not the case. I’m not sure where I’ll be farming tomorrow, but I guarantee you that the getting’s gonna be a whole lot better than in Grizzly Hills.

Farming Cobalt in Grizzly Hills

Getting up at an ungodly hour again today, I decided that farming cobalt in Grizzly Hills would be the thing to do.

The thing is, from the look of the Grizzly Hills mining map and the ore node distribution, it seemed like a farming effort in that Zone would be doomed to abject failure.

Fortunately, it was not so. First things first though, here is the Grizzly Hills mining Map:

As you can clearly see, the ore distribution is simply horrendous. However, probably because of a perfect storm of good luck in the spawning cycle as well as low farming competition, I managed to gather the following, in about 30 minutes:

60 Cobalt Ore
11 Crystallized Water
11 Crystallized Earth
3 Saronite Ore

Now I don’t know where that Saronite is coming from. I think I gathered it in the northern part of the map of Grizzly Hills, next to Zul’Drak.

On another note, Mandorall, my Paladin ore farmer and gatherer extraordinaire, has finally reached level 80. As I already have a character that can kick serious butt in Mordauk, my Death Knight, I decided to respec Mandorall.

My choices were Tank or Healer, and as our Guild already has several tanks and is short on healers, I chose Healer.

That is an article for another day, but let me tell you something: even at level 80, killing a 75th level mob while a healer is not exactly easy and it does require healing.

Damn.

Northrend: First Look at Grizzly Hills

To be fair, I did not grind for materials today, only for XP. And by grinding, I mean doing quests. I had to drive my girlfriend to an interview this morning, so I got up at an ungodly hour – 5AM – and started my weekend World of Warcraft adventure.

Since I was there so early, it was an excellent occasion to level my Mining. Throughout the day, and without really lookfing for them, I managed to gather about 60 Cobalt Ore, bringing my skill up to about 415.

I find the layout of Grizzly Hills very interesting. Since I am playing on my Alliance character Mandorall, I only had the occasion to visit Amberpine Lodge and Westfall Bridge Encampment. Both places are quest hubs, which cleverly lead you to discover the whole map.

You will also meet an old friend, Gryan Stoutmantle of Westfall fame. He is as needy as ever and has you running all sorts of quets for him. The usual.

There are also Furbolgs, Iron Dwarves and Runed Giants, which you must take care not to run into, as they are all over the place ant at 74 Elite, best avoided.

On a different note, I managed to rip off half my fingernail in a freak doorknob accident, so typing is a real pain in the ass. This post will thus be both uninformative AND short. Sorry about that.

Also, I made ribs, with a nice homemade barbecue sauce (check out my food website for the recipe) and they are ready, so Bon Appétit!
