Hellfire Peninsula Mining Map and Route

Last night I decided to take my farming endeavours to Outlands, and for a little variety, I decided to make my timed farming run with Mandorall, my level 76 Paladin.

To apologize for being such a good boy, being quiet for so long and all, I purchased the Artisan Riding Skill for him – 5000g, Yikes! – as well as a brand spankin’ new Swift Red Gryphon – 200g, what a steal!

After all those expenses, Mandorall had better be farming like its going out of style to make up for this!

Today, I present to you my Hellfire Peninsula Mining Map and Route:

As you can see from the screenshot above (click to enlarge), there is no shortage of Fel Iron in Hellfire Peninsula. In fact, as far as mining in Hellfire Peninsula goes, there is nothing else but Fel Iron.

In a one-hour timed run, here is what I gathered from Mining. I am excluding whatever I got from killing mobs, which wasn’t much anyways:

126 Fel Iron Ore
1 Blood Garnet
2 Living Ruby
18 Motes of Fire
19 Motes of Earth
4 Eternium Ore

I am very happy with these results, especially considering that I did my farming run at a busy time – 6pm server time – and I *know* there were several other people competing for MY ore!

Since I play an Alliance character, I started this run from Honor Hold, but the same route holds if you are starting from Thrallmar. The most constant spawn nodes were found in the little cleft, populated by birds, just south and a little east of Honor Hold. Despite all the other land-bound farmers, I found several Fel Iron nodes, just waiting to be mined, every time I flew over.

I know that my results may be a little optimistic because of the use of a fast flying mount, however I think this is mitigated by the competition. There’s no saying how many Fel Iron Ore you might get if you do a farming run, with a fast mount, at 4am server time!

The Longbeards, Nethergarde Bitter and more…

I’ve been questing in Hellfire Peninsula with Mordauk, my Death Knight. He was level 58 last night, and as of about 15 minutes ago, he is now level 62.

Of course, during the span of that frenzied leveling, I was confronted again by the quest “The Longbeards”.

The innkeeper at Honor Hold wants you to go find “The Longbeards”, a pair of dwarf brothers that went off in the West somewhere.

They can be found almost due south of Falcon Watch in Hellfire Peninsula, but before you go see them, I suggest (strongly) that you visit Nethergarde Keep in the Blasted Lands.

You see, one of the Longbeards brothers, Miren, will ask you to gain your trust by bringing booze. That’s a dwarf for you. But since he’s a picky boozer, he wants Nethergarde Bitter, which is only sold by Bernie Heisten in Nethergarde Keep.

Every time I do this quest, I look for that guy – I never seem to remember where he is. So hopfully, writing about it will permanently jolt my memory.

Bernie can be found in the Northern castle at Nethergarde Keep, in the bottom left room. Turn left when you get in, then left again – he’s a “Food & Drink Vendor”.

Once you have your Nethergarde Bitter – better yet, buy a couple and put them in the bank for your next Alt that needs it – go back through the Dark Portal, and bring Miren his poison.

To “Gain Miren’s Trust” you’ll also have to be Honored with Honor Hold, but you should already be there. Otherwise, just do a couple more quests in the Honor Hold area, and that should bring you right up.

Runecloth Farming at Expedition Armory

In previous posts, I examined the possibilities — or lack thereof — of farming Runecloth in Azeroth, as opposed to the blessed Outlands.

Today, I farmed the Holy Grail of Runecloth (outside of instances, of course), the Expedition Armory. The Expedition Armory is a destroyed town just south of Honor Hold in Hellfire Peninsula.

It is a depressing kind of place, haunted by 2 types of ghosts: the nice ghosts, who just walk around and work and laugh and do other ghostly activities, and bad ghosts, with which you can interact and that actually drop the Runecloth.

Once again, Grunman was the designated Runecloth farmer, a task with which he is getting well acquainted.

There are 3 types of mobs, and here are their “official” Runecloth drop rates:

Unyielding Footman 34%
Unyielding Knight 34%
Unyielding Sorcerer 34%

To the untrained eye, these drop rates may seem similar. Indeed they are. However, it SEEMED to me that the Sorcerers were more generous in their Runecloth contributions, often dropping three at a time.

Grunman spent one hour going around and around the Armory, killing everything that moved, and here is the total tally:

Cash Loot 12g 18s 19c
Vendor Trash 6g 2s 17c
Traveler’s Backpack 17g (yeah, right)
One other green Maybe 5g
Runecloth 111
Netherweave 16

The best thing about Expedition Armory is the respawn rate. Assuming the place is not crowded by pesky Alliance players doing quests, or G*d forbid, other farmers, you will never run out of things to kill — you can ALWAYS see your next victim –, nor will you be swamped by freshly spawned mobs.

All in all, farming Runecloth in that location is time well spent, assuming you actually need it. Granted, the green drops won’t disenchant into anything cooler than Arcane Dust (most of the time), but you’ll make more than enough money to cover repairs, and you’ll be able to level your tailoring by several points an hour.

Runecloth Farming For The Impatient

My previous cloth farming article, Mageweave Farming For the Lazy, involved Renei sending out Mandorall to do his dirty work, reaping Mageweave glory from his friend’s work.

How times change. He is now powerful enough to do his own grinding, especially if he can skill get experience and/or Rep points from the effort.

Renei was recently in a bind, namely the lack of Runecloth to advance his skills, and to sell on the Auction House for money to pay for all his bad habits.

After a little bit of looking around, Renei found the best and easiest Runecloth farming spot. That place is Expedition Armory (55,79 and thereabout), just south of Honor Hold in Hellfire Peninsula.

Here are the three Mob types, their levels and their Runecloth drop rates:

Unyielding Footman, 54-60, 32.60%
Unyielding Knight, 55-60, 32.43%
Unyielding Sorcerer, 55-60, 32.41%

While the footman has officially the highest drop rate, I had better experience with the Knights and especially the Sorcerers.

On top of that, even if the area is heavily farmed, the respawn rate of those mobs is very acceptable, meaning that you should not run out of things to kill.

My recommendations for farming are always based on what is EASIEST. I know there are mobs out there — especially in instances — with better drop rate than that. But the mobs I recommend killing are easily soloable, and if, like Renei, you are of much higher level, you should be able to pull a whole bunch of them at the same time and AoE them to death, multiplying the results for just a little bit more effort.

Renei is now level 67 Frost Mage. He can kill all those mobs without breaking a sweat, and skill gets Experience from them, which is a nice bonus.
