Chilled Meat from Frosthorn Rams?

Following the recommendation of Hammermond to farm Chilled Meat from Frosthorn Rams, I made my up the Fjord this morning, all the way to Fort Wildevar.

My goal, as it usually is, was to slaughter as many Frosthorn Rams and their Kids – no kidding, that’s what they’re called. Oh wait… /sigh…

Anyways, I started just east of Fort Wildevar, on the north shore of the lake, and I moved up in the mountain, slaughtering everything that moved.

“Taste cold steel, feeble Frosthorn Ram!” Actually it’s “Taste Cold Steel, feeble Canon-Restraint rope!”

If anyone can tell me where that’s from, you will have my undying respect and admiration. Sorry, no money. One person – Etienne – is excluded from this contest for my undying respect and admiration, since he already has them, and more importantly, I know he knows the answer.

But that takes us far, far away from Frosthorn Rams. Sorry ’bout the rambling.

Anyways, I farmed those buggers for about 30 minutes, and in that time I killed 75 Frosthorn Rams (and their Kids) and gathered 21 Chilled Meat, for a drop ratio of 28%.

That’s not exactly a fantastic drop rate, but it’s hard to tell on such a short run, I might have been extremely unlucky.

I also got 3 or 4 Vendor Trash items for an approximate total of 10g and 1 Green for Disenchanting or the Auction House.

All in all, not a bad run, as my repairs were less than a Gold.

Farming Shoveltusk Flank in Howling Fjord

On the recommendation of regular reader and commenter Hammermond, I got it in my head to go farm Chilled meat in Howling Fjord.

Of course, Hammermond had recommended that I kill Rams in the northern part of Howling Fjord for their meat, but being the dyslexic person that I am (I’m not dyslexic for real, by the way) I was certain that I was going to be killing Shoveltusks

I had killed maybe a dozen before I realized that the drops weren’t going the way I wanted them to… Being eminently adaptable, I decided to write about the availability of Shoveltusk Flank.

Shoveltusk Flank is a Howling Fjord-specific delicacy that drops from all manners of Shoveltusk mobs in Howling Fjord, such as the Shoveltusk Forager, Shoveltusk Bull, Shoveltusk Calf, and more.

The aggreagated drop rate for Shoveltusk Flank is 54%, which is excellent. Don’t ask me which type of Shoveltusk drops the most meat, I have no idea.

I about 20 minutes of farming Shoveltusk Flank in Howling Fjord, I got 33 Shoveltusk Flank, which is not so bad.

Unfortunately my farming efforts were rudely interrupted by the need to farm some Goldclover for my daily Northrend Inscription Research cooldown, so I probably could have gotten more.

Heroic Utgarde Keep: First Impressions

Despite the fact that yesterday, as today, was a weekday, we as a Guild decided to run an Instance. Since I had missed last Sunday’s run of Heroic Utgarde Keep, my guildmates were kind enough to run it again, except that this time I was included in the party.

First impressions? Easy. Overall, we did not wipe a single time, even though myself – the Death Knight – and Hammy, the Rogue, died a couple of times.

Thankfully, we died towards the end of boss fights, when the boss could be safely killed and our characters rezzed. True to form, I died right at the very end, trying to kill Ingvar. I still wasn’t rezzed when the loot windows appeared on the screen.

The fact that we know this Instance through-and-through does certainly help in not dying too much. Each boss, even the last one, were relatively easy and there were no surprises.

In terms of loot, I must say that as far as we are concerned, it was pretty average. All I got were 4 greens to be either disenchanted or sold at the Auction House, probably for peanuts.

I know that the mage in our party, Chianna, was happy with a Epic ring and a Blue Wand, both of which dropped from bosses. In my opinion, we really MUST get in the habit of passing on useless stuff so the Enchanter can need it, disenchant it, and we can all roll on the shards or other mats. This would make Instances a lot more potentially profitable for all involved.

None of the bosses or any other mobs for that matter dropped any Plate or cool weapons for my Death Knight, but it’s Ok, I’ll be back!

For the occasion, I was wearing my Knights of the Ebon Blade Tabard. Taking into account my 10% Human bonus to reputation, running Heroic Utgarde Keep was a LOT better than running the Ebon Blade Dailies.

Trash mobs – non Elites – were worth 2 or 3 rep points each, Elites from 16 to 33 and bosses 275. Even taking into account that I did not do all the Ebon Blade dailies yesterday, I am only about 30 rep points from Exalted, which I’ll take care of tonight.

All in all, I was very much amused and entertained by the Utgarde Keep Instance on Heroic setting. It is a fast and easy way to get gold, reputation and learn to work as a team for the harder challenges that are sure to come!

Farming Deadnettle in Howling Fjord

Deadnettle is a valuable herb, found as a drop in all Northrend Herbs. Its basically the Swiftthistle of Northrend.

By itself, it is used by Alchemists for various high level Flasks and Elixirs, and the Indestructible Alchemist Stone.

For Scribes (Inscriptors) such as myself, Deadnettle is just another Herb to be milled down to Azure Pigment, and if you’re lucky, Icy Pigment.

It seems that Deadnettle has a slightly better chance to mill down to Icy Pigment than other Northrend herbs, although that might be completely anectodal, so this morning I figured I would do a little run to gather it.

The thing is, since Deadnettle is a drop from gathering other herbs, you can’t really plan for it. You just gather whatever you can and hope for the best.

In 30 minutes for farming Deadnettle in Howling Fjord, I got:

31 Deadnettle
36 Goldclover
13 Tiger Lily
24 Crystallized Life

This basically means that I needed to gather 1.58 other Herbs for every Deadnettle I received which in my humble opinion is not bad at all.

Since I was in the area, I also took the opportunity to do the Steel Gate Patrol Daily Quest, which sees you climb aboard one of the gnomish planes and shoot down Gargoyles. One of the quickest and most fun-per-minute to be had in Howling Fjord! Also good for 275 Explorer’s League Reputation Points, in my case because my Death Knight is human and gets that nifty 10% rep bonus.

For you non-human characters out there, 250 Reputation Points it is.

All in all, I’m very satisfied with my little 30-minute Howling Fjord Herb run. I must admit that I’ve not checked the Auction House value of what I gathered, not have I milled it – server maintenance “oblige” – however 80 Herbs in 30 minutes is more than decent.

On top of that, I also got 2 Eternal Life and 4 Crystallized Life, for which I have no use at the moment, but that I’m furiously stacking in my Bank against a future need.

Farming Cobalt in Howling Fjord

Since I’ve started my new Blacksmithing adventures, I’ve been paying much closer attention to the insane amount of materials that will eventually be needed for me to level my Blacksmithing to 450, which is of course the goal of the exercise.

Keeping that in mind, this morning I made a very short run for Cobalt in Howling Fjord. Basically, I started in Westguard Keep, flew north, then east across the mountains, and then followed the coast along the two prongs of Howling Fjord, mining all the while.

I must say that I am very happy with the result of this short mining run.

You see, it took me about half an hour, and I did not encounter another soul, which in itself is rare enough.

My 30-minutes Cobalt Ore mining run in Howling Fjord yielded the following:

80 Cobalt Ore
1 Eternal Water (and 2 Crystalized Water)
1 Eternal Earth (and 3 Crystalized Earth)
1 Chalcedony

This is very different than mining in Sholazar Basin. In the Basin, at whatever time you’re there, you’re competing with a bunch of other people stealing your ore – or herbs, for that matter.

Howling Fjord was dead, and the Cobalt Ore nodes that seemed so rare in the first days of the expansion were now blossoming all over the landscape like zits on greasy skin.

Thankfully, Mandorall was there, powerful acne cream that he is, curing the land of this rash infestation!

All in all, 40 Cobalt Bars for 30 minutes of work is not bad. That’s more than a bar a minute, and I do wish that all farming was this easy!

Howling Fjord Herbalism Map

Today, I’m happy to share with you my Howling Fjord Herbalism Map. As you can see from looking at the map, my Druid Allanona has yest to completely explore Howling Fjord, however due to the magic of Gatherer Add-On, I can show you exacly where all the Herb nodes are.

Without further ado, here is my Howling Fjord Herbalism Map:

As far as I can tell, and as I have discovered, there are 2 types of Herbalism nodes available in Howling Fjord, Goldclover and Tiger Lily, and from those, 3 types of Herbs can be found. They are:

Goldclover
Tiger Lily
Deadnettle

Deadnettle is an Herb that can be found in other Herbalism nodes (just like Switfthisle), in this case Goldclover and Tiger Lily. In my Inscription experience, it mills down, just like the previous herbs, to Azure Pigment and Icy Pigment, although I’m told it also has the chance of dropping Frozen Beetle Husk when milled.

In terms of a perfect Herbalism route through Howling Fjord, I would suggest, and as you can see from the map, following the river to the north to gather Tiger Lily, then swigning down the eastern prong of Howling Fjord for Goldclover.

I would then cross over to the eastern part and my my way up, gathering more Goldclover as I go, all the way up to Westguard. I would then make a quick jaunt around Skorn, then back to the River for more Tiger Lily.

A word of caution, however: this is not Elwynn Forest. All the mobs in Howling Fjord are level 68 and up, and if you are gathering herbs at a zone-appropriate level and are not careful, you can quickly find that you aggroed a little bit above your pay grade. Paying attention to your environment while checking the scanner for Herbalism nodes can go a long way in keeping you healthty!

Howling Fjord Mining Map

Since Howling Fjord is one of the two starting areas in Northrend, one would have assumed that the mining there would be good.

Cobalt Ore is the only mining to be had in Howling Fjord. I was hoping for spwawn rates that rivaled Copper Ore in Elwynn Forest, or Fel Iron in Hellfire Peninsula.

On that note, I was sorely disappointed. While the map below indicates a goodly number of Mining Nodes, I must say that mining in Howling Fjord has been trying, to say the least.

Of course, I started there in the early days of Wrath of the Lich King, when the place was crawling with people having just arrived and needing to level up their mining skill, so ore nodes were very rare.

That being said, I will do another farming run there this weekend to learn what exactly can be had in terms of Cobalt Mining in Howling Fjord.

Here is the map:

Now as a mining route, I would follow the coast along each of the ‘prongs’ of the Howling Fjord, so to speak, starting from Westgarde Keep. I would first go the extreme north west of the map, then make my way south, then repeat in the eastern portion of the map.

As you can see from the map, the only ore to be had in Howling Fjord is Cobalt Ore, and neither the map nor my personal mining experience show anything else. Cobalt Ore nodes therefore do not seem to spawn anything else in terms of rare mining nodes.

[Sash of Sealed Fate] from a Sundered Rumbler in Netherstorm

Well, I got yet another Blue Drop, once again while leveling Mordauk, my Death Knight. He is now level 69 and already raising hell in Howling Fjord.

Sigh… They grow up so fast!

This time, I got [Sash of Sealed Fate]. This is a belt – obviously – that has a lvel requirement of 67, and that would be ideal for a Mage that does not have a belt that is part of a set.

Here are the stats:

81 Armor
15 Intellect
Increase spell power by 35
Increase Critical Strike Rating by 23

This nice little belt dropped for me from a level 67 Sundered Rumbler that I unfortunately (or not!) had to take out while clearing the way for killing Netherock.

Concerning my further adventures in Netherstorm, I must admit that I sort of gave up. I leveled all the way to 69 – just to beat Liberty to it (!) – then decided that the leveling would be better in Howling Fjord.

I hearthed to Shattrath, then ported to Ironforge, then on the boat to the Valgarde, the Alliance city there.

My Death Knight used a two-handed sword, and I must say that I am disappointed that those were not included in the early quest rewards. I guess I’ll go on a little longer, then go to the Borean Tundra and see what kind of sword I can get there!
