Farming Adder’s Tongue in Sholazar Basin

When it was time to do my twice weekly Northrend Alchemy Reserch – a 3-day cooldown affair – I realized that like a moron, I had not kept enough Adder’s Tongue. No idea where it went. So of course I had two choices. Either bite the bullet, and buy the Adder’s Tongue at the Auction House or, Option B, act like the Herbalist that I am, go to Sholazar Basin and farm it myself.

Since I’m writing this, you know that I opted for the less embarassing of options. Farming, that is.

Here is the map of my Adder’s Tongue Herbalism Route:

If you didn’t know it, farming Adder’s Tongue in Sholazar Basin is a piece of cake. Not literally, unfortunately, but it’s very easy. I only farmed for 12 minutes this morning, plus transit time to and from Dalaran, and here’s what I got.

48 Adder’s Tongue
18 Tiger Lily
4 Goldclover
1 Frost Lotus

To tell you the truth, I skipped over a wh0le bunch of Tiger Lily and Goldclover, which is not really my thing, because I was there for a very specific reason. Thing is, everything’s got a chance to drop some Frost Lotus, so I still gathered them.

Concerning the Adder’s Tongue herb route above, you can probably skip the southeastern route. It’s tiny and doesn’t have much potential. Stick with the Wildgrowth Manga and the western side of the map and you’ll soon have all the Adder’s Tongue you can use.

Sholazar Basin Herb Map

Because yesterday’s post was sorely lacking in terms of maps, this morning I decided that I would add the Sholazar Basin Herb Map, right away. So here it is:

Since I had more time, I wanted to revisit The Stormwright’s Shelf and farm for Crystallized Elements. I didn’t feel like I gave it enough of a shot last time, and finding a good farming spot for these things is important, both of the crafting level as well as the bank balance bottom line.

So I fly to Sholazar Basin from Dalaran, get on my Drake and fly to the the Stormwright’s Shelf, prepared to kick ass in my eternal Quest for Crystallized Elements – and Gold.

To my great surprise, the first Aqueous Spirit I encounter gives me a good walloping, and the second, coming right on the heels of the first nearly kills me!

What’s going on?

Then I notice that my beautiful and powerful Heart Strike, cornerstone of my arsenal, is not on my Action Bar!

I realized immediately what was the problem… The latest little patch has, once again, refunded my Talent Points, meaning that Mordauk this morning was very much full of potential but very light on actual capabilities.

I soon as I could I got back on my Drake and flew to a safe location, where I – once again – reallocated my Talent Points.

As soon as that was done, I flew back down to slaughter those worthless mobs who, only a few minutes ago, had given me so much trouble. But alas, the time had passed and I had to stop farming. So I only had time for the screenshot of the Sholazar Basin Herb Map, and I had to go.

Adder’s Tongue Herbalism in Sholazar Basin

Adder’s Tongue is one of the three herbs that grows naturally in Sholazar Basin. Adder’s Tongue can be used by high-level Alchemists for potions and Elixirs, as well as by high level Scribes (Inscription).

This morning, I had in my mind when I woke up to do a grand gathering tour of Netherstorm and see what grows there, as well as discover the map, get the achievement, etc. I kind of like Netherstom, as it is very otherwordly, but alas, all my carefully laid plans were foiled by the dreaded server maintenance.

Turns out that I had left Mordauk parked at the Nesingwary Camp in Sholazar Basin after yesterday’s Crystallized Water affair, so my time was extremely limited.

In only 14 minutes of farming Adder’s Tongue in Sholazar Basin, I managed to gather 25 Adder’s Tongue, which is very good.

Since I stop for the other herbs, I also gathered:

25 Tiger Lily
18 Goldclover
2 Deadnettle
10 Crystallized Life

I did not take a screenshot of the map this morning – it was too late by the time I remembered I should, however, you can read my article about Herbalism in Sholazar Basin. Incidentally, I just realized it doesn’t have a map!

Darn it. I guess that will be my mission tomorrow!

Crystallized Water in Sholazar Basin?

Is there Crystallized Water in Sholazar Basin? Crystallized Water is in every Northrend Zone if you know where to look for it!

Now of course Crystallized Water can be obtained by fishing, but I think the last time I fished seriously was to get Mithril-Bound Trunks in southern Stranglethorn Vale, so my fishing skills are not really up to date.

If I want loot, I have to brutally murder the mob that’s carrying it, and that’s the bottom line.

After some brief research, I found that the non-Elite mobs that have the best drop rate for Crystallized Water are the Aqueous Spirits of Sholazar Basin. So this morning, I set out for Sholazar Basin, my heart set on acquiring large quantities of Crystallized Water.

These Water Elemental type mobs hang out on The Stormwright’s Shelf, immediately north west of The Maker’s Perch, around 25,34.

Bear in mind that you will NEED a flying mount to get up there.

Here is where the Crystallized Water and it’s supporting mob, the Aqueous Spirit, can be found:

Unfortunately, what the “official” Crystallized Water drop rate doesn’t tell you is how many mobs there actually are.

You see, there are (2) primary components to great farming: a) a great drop rate and b) lots of mobs.

In a pinch, if there are TONS of mobs to kill, it can make you forget the poor rop rate, but rarely the other way around.

In the case of the Aqueous Spirits and their Crystallized Water, the drop rate wasn’t so fantastic – by my observation – and there were definitely not enough of them. The Stormwright’s Shelf is home to (3) types of mobs, and all drop Crystallized Elements:

Aqueous Spirit – Crystallized Water
Storm Revenant – Crystallized Air
Stormwatcher – Crystallized Earth

Overall, the Crystallized stuff drop rate from all those mobs wasn’t bad, but they are too few and far between to make this a good run. Here is what I gathered in about 30 minutes and 83 kills:

27 Crystallized Water
6 Crystallized Earth
9 Crystallized Air

Ok, ok, not entirely catastrophic But I digress. My repair bill was 1g 72 and some change, and just the Grey vendor trash I gathered was worth about 20g, plus of course the Crystallized Water and other elements, and the (2) greens that dropped make this a relatively profitable run.

I’m not sure I’ll be back here next time I need Crystallized Water, as it seems too much effort for too little return. Maybe I’ll level my fishing skill, instead…

Farming Titanium in Sholazar Basin

To start off, let me say that farming Titanium in Sholazar Basin is more accidental than by deisgn. You see, it seems to me that Titanium Ore nodes are a rare spawn of Saronite, so they might appear anywhere on the map.

It’s thus almost impossible to plan for them, and considering that no ore node stays up for very long, you’re lucky to find some.

My Blacksmithing is now up to 435, a respectable number by any standard, and I figure I will have need of Titansteel soon enough. I therefore have to stay in Sholazar Basin, mining Saronite and hoping for Titanium.

I spent about 40 minutes there this morning, farming titanium, and here’s what I got:

79 Saronite Ore
11 Titanium Ore
4 Cobalt Ore (from Borean Tundra, on the way in)
A great number of Crystallized Earth, Water, Fire and Shadow

11 Titanium Ore is good for (almost) 3 Titansteel Bar, along with 3 Eternal Earth, 3 Eternal Shadow and 3 Eternal Fire. So I’m (almost) set for my cooldowns for the next 3 days.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my friends and Guildmates Hladonar, Chianna and Chromer for their generous contributions that helped me level my Blacksmithing in record time. Couldn’t have done it without them.

Ok, well I could’ve, but it would have been a LOT longer and much more painful. Thank you again!

Sholazar Basin Frostweave Farming

Well, it seems my esteemed guild mate has beat me to the punch! Being ever procrastinating on just about everything, my little jaunt to Sholazar Basin has been sitting on my desk for awhile now..oops..

Now, Chianna, being a tailor was in desperate need of frostweave. So after checking around it has been claimed that the Venture Co. Ruffians have a 39% drop rate. Very cool indeed! I was hoping for a better drop rate since I have the tailoring enhancement and I tell ya, I was not disappointed. I was able to easily pull 5-6 and AOE with ease, with nary a scratch my little head! It’s an easy circuit with very little down time. After 40 min and 100 kills ( to keep the math simple for me!! ) heres the outcome from farming frostweave in Sholazar Basin:

69 Frostweave cloth
3 greens for disenchanting
3 scrolls
34g in loot and vendor trash

So, it does appear that the tailoring skill up DOES make a difference! Which I am pleased to note because while questing, it just didn’t seem that frostweave cloth dropped at any better rate.

I have been back several times farming an average of 1hour at a time and I have never walked away disappointed to say the least!

Frostweave Farming in Sholazar Basin

I was online quite a bit this weekend, leveling you know, and had much time to chat with my Guild mates. Chianna – Liberty, that is – told me that she had found a really great spot for farming Frostweave, with very high drop rates, et cetera.

That place is the Venture Co. in Sholazar Basin, just east of the Nesingwary camp. The thing is, Chianna is a tailor and thus gets bonus cloth drops, but I figured, if its very good for her, its probably just good for me, right?

So why not give it a shot?

So when I woke up this morning, I hopped on the taxi from Dalaran to Sholazar Basin, then made coffee. Priorities, priorities.

By the time I returned, I had arrived at Sholazar and was ready to paint the Basin red, so to speak.

The thing is, if you don’t have the extra tailoring bonus, the place pretty much sucks. In 45 minutes of farming, I gathered no more than 28 Frostweave Cloth, which is extremely bad by anybody’s standards.

Of course, I received a lot of Thick Fur Cloth Scraps, which are worth a soothing amount of Gold at the vendor, and also 3 or 4 nice Green drops, probably worth over 50g when properly disenchanted, but the goal of this farming run was Frostweave cloth, and on that account, I was sorely disappointed.

I’m going to ask Liberty if she can write a little something about how that area performs for Frostweave drops WITH the Tailoring bonus. Maybe then we can figure out what the bonus likely is.

Herbalism in Sholazar Basin

Just like I did with Mandorall yesterday, I did a timed farming run in Sholazar Basin this morning, but this time for herbs.

I have bought the Artisan Flying Skill as well as Cold Weather Flying for Mordauk as well, and that has seriously depleted my funds, so looking for herbs in Sholazar Basin seemed like a good way to make it up.

I could only do a 35 minutes herb farming run this morning, on account that both I and my significant other are feeling under the weather – must be some bug going around. I’ll spare you the more gruesome details.

In 35 minutes of flying around in Sholazar Basin, I gathered:

54 Adder’s Tongue
35 Tiger Lily
11 Goldclover
14 Deadnettle
4 Frost Lotus
3 Eternal Life

Now, the Eternal life is almost worthless, on account that Crystalized Life drops very, very regularly, however the Frost Lotus is still very valuable, since it is used in high-level Alchemy recipes.

The real kicker is this: I milled the herbs – I am a Scribe, after all – and got the following:

61 Azure Pigment
6 Icy Pigment

The 61 Azure Pigment will make 30 Ink of the Sea, and the Icy Pigment will make 3 very valuable Snowfall Ink.

Overall, in that little 35 minute farming period, I’m reasonably sure that I gathered the equivalent of nearly 500g of materials on my server’s Auction House. Not bad!

Saronite Ore Mining in Sholazar Basin

As the more astute and observant of my readers have probably noticed, the last series of articles were not written by me, but rather by my friend Etienne. Etienne is a real pro when it comes to daily quests, and has written a whole series of articles on how to raise reputation with various Northrend factions.

I appreciate his help even more considering that I’ve been busy writing a Blacksmithing leveling guide, as well as putting together the 10-Day WoW Gold course, for which I encourage you to sign up, either at the bottom of this article or in the sidebar to the left.

Now, to the meat of today’s topic: mining Saronite Ore in Sholazar Basin.

I spent about 40 minutes this morning mining for ore in Sholazar Basin, on my brand new flying mount. By the way, what a difference that makes! I actually managed to steal ore right from under the nose of some earth-bound landlubbers! Of course, when I was the worm crawling on the surface of Azeroth, I thought that people that swoop down from the heavens and steal my ore were worse than scum and totally reprehensible.

Now that I’m the one doing it, well, “All’s Fair in Love and (World of) War(craft)!”

In 40 minutes of mining in Sholazar Basin, I got the following:

140 Saronite Ore
12 Titanium
6 Eternal Earth
1 Eternal Air
5 Eternal Shadow
1 Eternal Water

And if that wasn’t enough – it isn’t, I’ve got mounts to pay for! – the following also dropped:

1 Monarch Topaz
2 Sun Crystals
2 Forest Emeralds
1 Chalcedony
1 Autumn’s Glow
3 Dark Jade
1 Huge Citrine

In all honesty, all that stuff for 40 minutes of farming is spectacular, in my humble opinion.

I’ve not had the chance to calculate the exact Auction House value of all those items, but I know that some of those gems are worth, theoretically at least, over 100g.

Yesterday, I purchased the Artisan Riding Skill for my Death Knight Mordauk, as well as the Cold Weather Flying skill, for a cool 6 grand. So I’m sure you understand if I have a little catching up to do!

Sholazar Basin Mining Map

Since my highest level toon, Mandorall, is still only level 76 – I know, I know, I should get crackin’ – he has still not explored all the Zones in Northrend, far from it.

But as Expansions to World of Warcraft are relatively few and far between, I figure I’d make it last. Eh, to each his own!

As it happens, Mandorall is also my main Miner. I have other characters that mine as well, but they are lower level and could not dream of farming Thorium, let alone Cobalt, Saronite or Titanium.

So far, the best place Mandorall has found to mine Saronite in Northrend in Sholazar Basin. The place is literally crawling with mining nodes. I managed to gather many stacks of Saronite Ore while questing there, and I wasn’t even looking for them.

For your farming convenience, I include below a map of the mining nodes of Sholazar Basin. It may not be obvious – indeed, I know it is not so – but most nodes seem to be for either Saronite or Rich Saronite. I surmise that Titanium is a rare spawn node in Saronite nodes, so any of the nodes there may indicate Titanium. More research is needed on that topic and will follow.

So withouth further ado, here’s the map:

Now as you can see, most nodes are concentrated on the rim of the Basin.

I would thus recommend running around in circles until you fall down.

Just kidding. Do one full revolution, the make your way to each of the pillars and look for mining nodes there.

This is of course just a recommendation, and you may adjust – indeed you should – your gathering method to your personal playing style.

I’m sorry to say that I don’t yet have solid numbers to share with you, since my mining in Sholazar Basin has been more incidental at this point then organized.

As soon as I reach level 78, which I believe is the requirement to be able to use my flying mount, I will do a timed run and share the results with you.
