Farming Frost Lotus in Storm Peaks

Because I don’t have a huge network of WoW gamers from whom I can aggregate data, I have to calculate my percentage drops in a different way. I go on my farming run, and at the end of the run, see what percentage of total drops what I was farming represents against the overall total.

For example, this morning, I went farming for Frost Lotus in Storm Peaks. As you may know, the principal herb nodes in Storm Peaks are Lichbloom and Icethorn, each of which have a chance of dropping one or more (generally one) Frost Lotus when harvested.

So I farmed for about 25 minutes this morning, and I gathered the following:

26 Lichbloom
24 Icethorn
19 Crystallized Life
2 Frost Lotus

Crystallized Life doesn’t count towards my percentage total, since it may or may not drop from Herb nodes. Only the primary herbs, in this case Lichbloom and Icethorn, count towards the total. Notice that there is no Deadnettle. Guess I’ll have to go farm Goldclover or something like that if I need any of these.

But that’s beside the point. 2 Frost Lotus for 50 Primary Herbs means 4%, which is considerable better than what I got in Zul’Drak. Moreover, Lichbloom and Icethorn are higher-level herbs and are not only move valuable on the Auction House, they are also considerably more useful to level my Alchemy skill.

I realize that the sample I base myself on to affirm a 4% gathering rate is quite small. By that I mean minuscule. I hope to be able to build on it in the coming weeks and be able to give you a more precise estimate. But right now, it looks pretty good for Frost Lotus in Storm Peaks.

Farming Relics of Ulduar in Storm Peaks: Winning Proposition?

Last week, I got a really nice email from a reader called Jake, who alerted me to an interesting Gold-making opportunity that I was not really aware of.

Being that I had been away from the game for a month and a half or something, I was not necessarily aware of the latest developments, and Jake kindly pointed me to farming the Relic of Ulduar as a way of making WoW Gold.

Relics of Ulduar are used to gain reputation with the Sons of Hodir, in Storm Peaks. These guys are the ones selling those cool Mammoth Mounts you’ve seen around, and apparently, lots of people are keen to gain rep with these guys.

I wanted to spend an hour of my precious time farming these relics, and see what I could get.

Now to the Farmer-in-Chief: I sent Mordauk, my powerful Death Knight, to gather some Relics. Not only is Mordauk my “main” if you will, he is also the best-equipped of all my characters, and most likely to come back from the farming more or less in one piece.

Mordauk has about 50% Epic gear – all 5-man Heroic stuff mind you – none of that time-vampire raiding gear – so I knew I would have to be mindful of the repair bill. Check him out now on WoW Armory, it’ll give you an idea.

To start with, here is the map of where I went to farm my Relics, based on my reader’s recommendations:

The mobs available for killing in that place – the Snowdrift – are:

Stormriders
Stormforged War Golems
Stormforged Artificers

There are also some Snowdrift Jormungar, monstrous man-eating worms that they are, but they don’t drop Relics. You may still want to kill them for their delicious and valuable Worm Meat.

Every single mob in that area is level 78-80, non Elite. All of them, with no exceptions fell under my blows in seconds, and will do so for any half-decently-played level 80, so I’m not going to go into details about DPS rotations, amount of hit points, etc.

You hit them, they die, you search their bodies for loot like a peasant on a battlefield, and move on. That’s it.

In the next picture, Mordauk turns a perfectly serviceable Stormforged War Golem into a pile of rusting crap. Observe:

Fun… LOL … Ahem. Yes. So I spent an hour killing all those guys, and here is what I got:

“Looted” a respectable 11g 5s 5c
“Pilfered” 36g 72s 39c worth of Grey Vendor Trash
“Appropriated” 25 Crystallized Air, 13 Frostweave Cloth, 12 Worm Meat (Gross I know) and 5 Green Magical items
“Liberated” 66 Relics of Ulduar

The WoW Gold total, before selling the Relics of Ulduar, was 47g 77s 44c, which is not so bad, but not great, either.

HOWEVER, the 66 Relics of Ulduar sold on the Auction House for 157g 54s 20c – after Auctioneer Chilton’s cut (that guy must be loaded).

My Grand Total, therefore, for one hour of Farming Relic of Ulduar in Storm Peaks, is 205g 31s 64c, which is a LOT better.

You must also take into account that the Crystallized Air and the Worm meat are not yet sold, and the 5 green items, once properly disenchanted, should yield at least another 75-100g.

It is safe to conclude that if it’s WoW Gold you want, then at over 300g per hour, you could do worst than farming Relics of Ulduar in Storm Peaks.

Oh – here is one last picture, this time of Mordauk about to teach table manners to a Stormforged Artificer:

“Hey! You say you made 300g, but what about the repairs on that expensive-looking Epic gear you mentionned? Did they bring you down to the poor house? Did they make you re-evaluate your life choices, cringe at little noises, and wail in regret at a thousand missed opportunities?”

Not quite. They cost 2g 19s 57c. That’s it. My new Rogue’s mount money is safe.

Eternal Fire in Storm Peaks, Reality Check

Yesterday, I got a comment from a reader on my previous article on farming Crystallized Fire in Storm Peaks. He seemed to think that I had made up the whole thing for some nefarious purpose.

But it’s possible that drop rates are adjusted, or to be incredibly unlucky. I’ve seen it happen, and been on the receiving end of some extremely sad drop rates.

So just to be on the safe side, and to be certain I give you the most precise and reliable information, I did another farming run for Eternal Fire in Storm Peaks this morning, scrupulously timed at 30 minutes, and here is what I got:

104 Wailing Winds killed – I can tell this by the number of grey crystals I have – they all drop ONE, no more and no less
41 Crystallized Fire
2 Grey Vendor Trash Items
3 Greens for Disenchanting or for the Auction House

This makes for a 38.32% drop rate, which is very acceptable. Here is the screenshot of my Backpack at the end of the run.

Of course, it would be relatively easy to fake the screenshot. I do, however, have better things to do than fake screenshots. Like farming, for example!

All in all, I must confirm that Frostfloe Deep, in Stormpeaks, is an excellent place to farm Crystallized Fire, with a relatively good drop rate and fast spawning, easy to kill mobs.

Farming Crystallized Fire in Storm Peaks

Yesterday, I wrote about my little bottleneck in smelting Titanium, caused by the general unavailability of Crystallized Fire, and by extension Eternal Fire.

Thankfully, one of my regular readers and prolific commenter, Hammermond, pointed me in the right direction. Apparently, there’s a place in Storm Peaks where Crystallized Fire is free for the taking, or near enough. By far the best drop rate for Crystallized Fire in all of Azeroth! He did comment that I needed a good DPS to make my farming more efficient. As it turns out, my Death Knight Mordauk is more than effective at dealing out DPS – at least by my standards – so was excellently suited to the task.

So this morning, I turned my sight to the North, and decided that farming Crystallized Fire in Storm Peaks would be a groovy thing to do. And boy was I not disappointed!

The location is roughly (62,40), inside a cave where Disturbed Taunka Ancestors lie. They are not a hindrance, being ghosts which which you cannot interact.

The mobs you want to kill are Wailing Winds. Here’s a screenshot:

They are not very difficult to kill, having only about 12,500 hit points. Moreover, the respawn rate is more than acceptable, as I rarely went more than 20 seconds without having something to kill.

In about 40 minutes of farming Crystallized Fire in Storm Peaks, here’s what I got:

132 Wailing Winds killed
55 Crystallized Fire
5 Various Greens for Disenchanting or the Auction House
5 Grey Vendor Trash Items

Taking into consideration all the [Hoary Crystals] dropped by the Wailing Winds as well as the other vendor Trash, I managed to accumulate 36 gold, 62 silver and 50 copper, which is not bad at all considering I was not even trying. That will more than cover my repairs.

According to my Auctioneer Add-On, who I admit has been wrong in the past, all the Crystallized Fire I got may be worth up to 250g, which is excellent for 40 minutes of farming.

Of course, I’m sending all the Eternal Fire to Mandorall so that he can continue smelting Titansteel!

Farming Lichbloom in Storm Peaks

After a weekend of doing real-life things, and in which I unfortunately did not write anything, I am back with more farming advice and detailed runs.

This morning’s adventures brought me, again, to Storm Peaks. The place was pretty crowded, considering the ungodly hour at which I do my farming runs. There must have been 10-12 other level 80s around, and I surmise more than a few of them were up to no good – that is, farming, and cramping my style!

Lichbloom seems to be the most abundant herb in Storm Peaks. In all my farming runs there, I always gather more of it by a ratio of approximately 3:2, the rest being Icethorn. As an Inscriptor – a Scribe – this makes very little difference to me, as I mill everything down for their pigments anyways.

Here is what I gathered in a little over 30 minutes of farming Lichbloom in Storm Peaks:

42 Lichbloom
29 Icethorn
19 Crystallized Life
2 Frost Lotus

Since my only Inscription bottleneck is now Icy Pigment, my bank is getting to be VERY ful of Azure Pigment, the common pigment that drops from Northend herbs. I gather I must have at least 30 stacks of it.

I know, I know, I should make inks out of them and exchange them for Ink of the Sea.

But if I did that, what farming could I write about?

On another note, Relieff’s multitude of Auctions came to a close on Sunday morning. My new bank balance is 1474g 64s and 16c, adding up to total sales of 967g 36s and 59c, which is not too shadow considering all I am selling is random stuff I find, and not even including herbs, pigments, food or cloth.

In the next few days, I reckon I’ll be writing my much-delayed Blacksmithing Leveling Guide. Mandorall’s blacksmithing is now past 440, and I have all the data needed to write. It’s just a matter of doing it!

Farming Herbs in Storm Peaks

Even since Storm Peaks has been pacified by the Guild a week or so ago, it’s now a much nicer place to farm.

No seriously, I know that our killing Loken has no incidence on the rest of the Zone, but anyways.

What drew me to Storm Peaks in the first place to farm is the over-abundance of Herb nodes. Of course, that can be deceptive, since maybe the respawn rate could be horrible, or there could be a regular, incredibly large number of farmers.

Fortunately for Mordauk, this was not the case. I only encountered a couple of other players farming the same thing as me, and it was a very polite affair. For your convenience, I am including a Storm Peaks Herbs Map:

As you can surely see, my claim of the concentration of herb nodes is not exagerated in the slightest. Here is was I got from farming herbs in Storm Peaks for 35 minutes:

48 Lichbloom
29 Icethorn
27 Crystallized Life
3 Frost Lotus

While this is technically not spectacular, what really was was what I got when I milled down the herbs: 11 Icy Pigment – which leads me to think that the drop rates have indeed been fiddled with.

On a slightly sour note, what really annoyed me about farming herbs in Storm Peaks was the fact that there are mountains everywhere, and that makes is hard to get from here to there. If I didn’t have a flying mount, I would have chewing the carpet out of frustration!

Overall, farming herbs in Storm Peaks was a worthwhile endeavor, and I will certain be back!

Heroic Halls of Lightning

The Guild – Brute Force – got together last night for a little Heroic Instance, and we decided on Heroic Halls of Lightning, since it was both the regular Daily Instance as well as the Heroic one.

We had a relatively rough start, we picked up the pace and managed to clear pretty much the whole instance, wiping a total of 6 or 7 times in the process.

The first of our wipes were most probably imputable to the fact that our tank, Fluffmuffin, had never tanked before, and Heroic Halls of Lightning is not the best place to learn. Even the regular non-Boss Elites hit HARD.

I don’t mean that as criticism in any way: I know that Death Knight tanks are notoriously hard to play, and if you’ve never done it, then your gonna die. A. Lot.

And we did!

About an hour into the instance, our regular tank, Kithany, came online and while I’m not going to say that it was smoooooth sailing from then on, things looked up a little. We cleared all the mobs, killed all the bosses, until we got to Loken.

Hladonar, who’d been there before, explained the strategy for killing Loken. It involves piling up on top of him while he’s doing melee damage, and running like a rabbit when he does an Arcane Explosion (different name, same death).

So fortified with this knowledge, our Epic raiding party attacked! And even before Loken got down to 300,000 hit points (starting at about 575,000), we were decimated.

Pernicious doubts invaded our fragile minds… Are we ready for this? Are we going to wipe 10 times, only to get home empty-handed?

When we re-entered the Instance, the first groups of mobs had started to respawn!

Oh no!

Throwing caution to the winds, we ran through them and mowed them down mercilessly! We HAD to get to Loken before more mobs appeared!

Fortunately, only the first 4 or 5 groups had respawned. After dispatching them, we ran back to the Boss, Loken, and fine tuned our strategy.

Our strategy consisted of the same as before, but better. Be more careful, we KNOW this guy can kick our collective asses! Our Chef, Gravewax, cooked us up a Fish Feast, I drank a Elixir, tooted my Horn and into the breach we charged!

Loken stired himself, drawing himself to his full height and power, and responded to our assault with flying fists of fury and giant stomping feet!

The Earth rumbled!

Lightning crackled into the dry air of the giant’s lair!

Back and forth we ran, expanding every power available to us, hitting and wailing and running and hitting again!

And after what seemed like an eternity, a moment frozen in time, the defeated Loken fell, spilling his loot into our covetous hands!

A great cry of victory went up from our ranks, instantly replacing the anguish and exaltation we all felt. We did it! The giant was dead! No more, from his throne of stone, would he terrorize the good people of Storm Peaks!

Reveling in the moment, we congratulated ourselves on this Heroic achievement and heroes far and wide praised our Epic achievement.

The time had come to search the Giant’s Hoard… A Frozen Orb, a Shard, the Lightning Giant Staff, and … the Colossal Skull-Clad Cleaver!

Mordauk, yours truly, was awarded the Epic Axe by what seemed like general consensus. He gratefully picked up the awesome weapon and hoisted it on his well-toned shoulders, in the knowledge that such a weapon would prove a boon in the adventures that are sure to come!

Thank you Drehand, Gravewax, Kithany, Fluffmuffin and of course Hladonar, for what has been the most exhilarating night of World of Warcraft in a long, long time. I would go on with the story, but I have a 6 hour drive to Toronto looming before me, and I have to get going!
