What do you think?
The short answer to that, just like all crafting professions in my humble opinion, is a big fat NO.

That being said, I think that Inscription has a lot more potential that all other crafting professions to actually turn a profit.
My Inscription skill level is now 350, and I reached it faster that I would have thought possible, and my expectations were pretty low.
That means that so far, I have burned an incredible, mind-numbing amount of potential gold on milling and using herbs. I am lucky insofar as I farmed my own, and have not had to buy them from the Auction House at the regular inflated prices.
But while I did not get the gold from the herbs, I have not “spent money” in the purest sense of the term, I have just “not earned it”. Ok, I know I’m splitting hairs, but bear with me.
My total, direct, out-of-pocket for Inscription so far is may 100g, and that’s buying the parchments, recipes and level-ups. That is very reasonable.
If you look at all the money I have “not earned” by using the Herbs, I’m very deep in the hole and this venture will never be profitable.
However, I’m an optimist and I’d rather the see the glass half-full. The good news is, the Glyphs I am now making ACTUALLY SELL for decent money, like 5-25g each, and the mats required to make them are very minimal, just one or two inks as well as a parchment.

I think, and that remains to be tested, that once Inscription is maxed out, simple and everyday gathering as opposed to farming will be more than sufficient to supply you with herbs to keep making and selling Glyphs ant that’s, well, a good thing!
Now as you’ve probably noticed, today is December 31st, 2008. Since beginning to write this article, I’ve ingested more than half a bottle of “Blanquette de Limoux” (2005), a “Vin Blanc Mousseux” as opposed to champagne.
My beloved just came back from her last day at her job – she is starting a new one next Monday – and we are drinking a little in celebration.
Tonight, I am cooking “des ris de veau aux champignons” with rice and vegetables, with dumplings as appetizers. The recipe will be available on my food website in the coming days if all goes well.
If you don’t know what those are, feel free to look it up. If you’re a meat-and-potatoes kind of person, and there’s nothing wrong with that, you might not like it but, eh… You don’t know what you’re missing!
Erin and I, as well as regular contributors Liberty and Hladonar, wish you health, happiness and lots of World of Warcraft in the New Year!
