Feral Druid DPS Rotation

December 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Besides my incredibly powerful Retribution Paladin, Mandoral, none of my characters come close to infliction the damage that my humble 70th Level Druid does.

I have built Allanona using almost exclusively the Feral Talent tree, with some notable exceptions.

But having Feral talents does not a DPS Monster make! You have to know how to use them. For this purpose, I have written a short article on the abilities rotation you must use to truly be unstoppable!

Scenario One: Starting the Fight from Stealth Mode (Prowl)

  1. Pounce – stuns and causes damage over time
  2. Mangle – not only does this do damage, but also enhances the damage from your Bleed Effect abilities (Rake, Rip, Pounce)
  3. Mangle – again, until you have 5 pips on the mob
  4. Ferocious Bite – finishing move

If the mob is not yet dead, Mangle it again until it is.

Scenario Two: Starting the Fight in full view:

  1. Mangle – Damage and Bleed Effect Enhancement
  2. Rake – Bleed Effect, Damage over time
  3. Mangle – again until you have 5 pips
  4. Ferocious Bite – Finishing Move
*** To Level Quickly and Efficiently, use this Automated Leveling Assistant, either for Alliance or Horde ***

Once again, Mangle if the mob is not yet dead. It will soon be.

These rotations should be used when fighting regular mobs, not Elites. When fighting Elites, you should replace Ferocious Bite by Rip, as combined with the enhancement effect of Mangle, Rip will do more damage over time than Ferocious Bite.

A note on Faerie Fire: I don’t always use it, as in Cat Form it does no damage, only slightly reduces the armor of your opponent. If you are going to use it, I would stick it at the very beginning or immediately before your finishing move.

Faerie Fire is also useful, both in Dire Bear and Cat Form, to pull enemies that may be further than you care to venture. Using this technique will likely save you from annoying adds.

And by the way, if you were asking yourself “Hey Renei! How come you don’t use claw? I use it all the time and it works great!”, well, it is because Mangle costs the same amount of Energy Point, does twice the damage (at least) and to top it off, enhances your Bleed Effects, of which you have many. So that’s why.

Merry Christmas!

I always use Rake as my second attack even if I start in stealth.

The way my energy rebounds I usually get the Mangle in before the 1st tick of the Rake and at worst the 2nd tick of the pounce.

Sorry, this is not how you druid dps. I initially though this was written before WotLK, but the post date says otherwise.

Are you guys allergic to Shred or something?
My Shreds crit for more than 4/5 point Ferocious Bite crits. Here’s how:

Make sure to glyph for Shred if you want maximum effect during leveling. (but irrelevant for bosses)

Basically, with all the good talents, the already powerful shred costs 42 energy, will get +30% if the target is bleeding (from pounce), +20% from Rend and Tear, and +20% while the target is stunned (from pounce) (glyph).

This makes shred throw up insane numbers. Most targets will not live through the (talented) pounce stun. As you might imagine, down time is minimal when you don’t get hit.

    vs normal mobs (from stealth):
    1) Pounce
    2) Mangle
    3) If Omen of Clarity doesn’t proc or Mangle doesn’t crit:
    4) Tigers Fury to fill energy to full
    5) Shred x2
    6) If the mob is still alive, then Ferocious Bite

If Omen of Clarity procs, then you’ll still get 2 Shreds in during the pounce stun.

If you get a Mangle crit, you’ll have plenty of combo points for a big Ferocious Bite, and TF may be overkill, but it’s still way fun.

If Tiger’s Fury is on CD and you get no OoC you will only get one shred in, so Mangle again. FB at 4/5 CPs
Alternately you could Maim, let your energy fill up and Shred before the stun wears off. You’ll take less damage this way, but eh.

    vs normal mobs (no stealth)
    1) Mangle
    2) Rip (make it bleed for Rend and Tear)
    3) Maim (so you can get behind it)
    4) Tigers Fury if it’s up
    5) Shred
    6) Shred or Mangle if the stun wears off
    7) Ferocious Bite

You don’t really have to Maim, but it will prevent a couple hits and reduce your eventual healing time.

vs multiple normal mobs if you want to stay in cat
    Combinations of the above, but:
*Start as normal, but hit Savage Roar at 1/2 combo points. Hopefully this will last you through 2/3 mobs or so.
*After you hit Tigers Fury hit Berserk.

    vs Bosses
    1) Pounce (it won’t stun but you’ll start doing some damage and you won’t draw aggro. Wait for energy to tick back up to full, while the tank secures aggro.) (this really isn’t strictly necessary and may make party members nervous, so…)
    2) Feral Faerie Fire, and refresh it when needed.
    3) There is some debate on how many combo points you should Savage Roar at, so experiment with it. You want to keep the buff up.
    4) Mangle if no other druids.
    5) Shred until 4/5 combo points.
    6) Wait until 70 energy and pop an AP trinket, then Rip immediately followed by a Mangle.
    7) Repeat from step 2.

Once the tank has very solid aggro, and you are a stage in the fight where you won’t get interrupted from dps:
Get full energy, then pop Berserk, then Shred like mad. (keeping Mangle and Bleeds up)

Use Tigers Fury when the energy won’t be wasted (e.g. right before a dps lull in the fight is a waste)

You have to be careful, if your tank is undergeared or underskilled you may find yourself easily threat capped.
